Wife bought this in the Philippines about 20 years ago, it was some pale yellow varnished finish, and I thought it looked awful and could never work out quite what it was meant to be. But she liked it so it stayed....
It followed us back and forth across the world a couple of times, still looking ugly and plain, but after the divorce, after the wife was history I thought I’d have a go at cleaning it up and selling it. A few hours with a sanding machine and I realised it had some very interesting wood colours under the crappy coloured varnish.
So then I bought some Danish oil from Screwfix and sprayed a coat on. Wow, that worked well.
It looked excellent, and sat in the conservatory for a year or two, then we moved house, had no room for it, and it now languishes in the garage. I might drag it out some day and see if I can sell it, but it really needs a better sanding job as the oil showed up a lot of marks where I’d missed things.
I have a similar type piece in the front room, that I call my Fred Flintstone coffee table, a 2” slab of teak, that also needs properly sanding to get some staining off. One day....
