Hi All
I am new here and I jointed to pick up some tips from the experts here on mostly silver brazing and MIG welding.
I have a SIP130 welder for now which I am restoring but I think it is a bit DIY and will probably get rid of it soon. My interest at the moment is with a vintage bit of kit that I picked up at a bootfair which an old model engineer used for silver brazing metals in his model construction.
As I am wishing to do a very similar thing but with jigs and specialist tools I bought the equipment for a song and now am about to try it out.
Basically it is a great big transformer and current selector in a box made by a company called G.K.Lancaster of George Street Croyden....I have no idea how long ago...probably the sixties. Here it is:
a closer view of the control panel is shown here:
and the terminals have three apparent combinations (A,B and C) here:
The accessories that come with it are shown here:
which are basically the two cables (red and black). The red has a handle into which fits a carbon rod and the black has a clamp presumably for clamping the work pieces together. I assume these will be thin sheet of brass and mild steel.
Also included are 17 "silver brazing" rods which he said are hard to find and expensive, and some powdered white flux in a coffee jar labeled "Easy Flo Flux - Johnson Mathley - Brazing and Silver Soldering"
My questions are
1) How do I connect this kit up?
2) How then do I use it?
3) What are the "silver" rods and are they expensive filler metals?
4) What safety precautions (eyes and fumes) should I take?
5) Has anyone ever seen this sort of kit before?
I know there are always experts on these foums who can help and it will be really gratefully received as I am dying to tinker with this equipment but don't want to ****** it up.
Many thanks.
Jim
