I need two pieces of steel plate

About ten inches by ten inches and about ten mm thick I would say. But, what sort of plate should I get?
This is the purpose: I am going to shoot at one piece using regular Lead Shot the other piece will be shot with Steel Shot. The purpose is then for both pieces to be x-ray Microtomographically examined so we can see what the effects of the different shot is on the steel. What would be a good material for this purpose or shall O just go with CRS or shallI get some stainless?

I want it to be as easy as possible to pick out or define the grain structure/stress point.

Is there a ballistic / forensic standard for the material?

I think the Americans on YouTube go on about AR or something but that’s for targets not analysis

Not as far as I know, there would be no reason. Hardox usually for targets. This is to compare shot types so anything will do but ideally something that stresses easily.

I would have thought 10mm is overkill can't see either making any dent's in it. Have a watch of this at 14.30 seconds

You are reinventing the wheel....you can ask for a review of previous work at one of the Institutes........probably the IOM3........which used to be the Institute of Metallurgists.......they will send you all the research work done into the subject......But I can tell you now that all else being equal the steel shot will affect the target steel more than lead shot....I dont think you need to be a Metallurgist to understand that.....Im pretty sure most members on here will tell you the same....

Don't you need something straight from the manufacturer? If you're hoping to see the results of impact from lead and steel shot, if you use a piece of scrap it's almost certainly going to have already had loads of impacts from being dropped or hit.
