Sloe Gin

Well it is the brew room anyone brewed any sloe gin yet? picked 15lb this morning so diluted 12 bottles of gin into them this afternoon will have to wait for a couple of months before I get to taste, cant wait!

Any one interested in the recipe it is 1 lb of sloe berry to one bottle of gin and add 4oz of CASTER sugar,
shake once a day for the first week to dissolve the sugar and give the occasional shake and keep bottled for two months and then decanter back into the bottle. Something to keep out the cold in the long dark winter months. P.S. bumper year for berrys this yea.r

We're picking damsons tomorrow for damson vodka. The recipe is much the same but my father insists on pricking each berry with a fork! There are loads of sloes here too.

Forgot to say about pricking the berrys first! I use a fork myself read on one forum some sad git using a "pin" wish I had all that spare time to do that.

p.s. have a recipe for the pickled berrys to make truffles with the left overs was always a little bit miffed at throwing out the berry as you get a great wiff of gin from them was sure there was another use for them.

I do cross between the two; I make sloe vodka. Gone off the gin one a bit. Last years' wasn't so good and it ruined a load of Gordons. But the vodka was good. Didn't have enough Damsons so made some jam instead. Mmmmm.
They say that you shouldn't pick the sloes until they've a had a frost on them. Frost? Have you been outside? I just stick them in the freezer to split the skins a little. Pricking each one is tiresome.

I make elderberry and crabapple jelly. Goes with everything, especially venison.

Cant touch vodka at all makes me so ill and thats not the volume just one niis enough to do it. Makes me a cheap date i suppose! or is that a damsen?

We have had two morning frosts already have been watching the sloes for the past fortnight and they are ready, tried spliting them last year and it makes the gin so bitter and cloudy better off pricking them. Just grab a slack handfull and stab away with a fork.

Iv heard freezing them is the easy way skins split, never tried it myself mind..

I'm sure I was told years ago by an old chap that brewed allsorts of different recipes that the sloes must be prick using a SILVER fork, Have not got a clue if this is correct or not.

Like a small damson.

It is the berry from the black thorn bush purple in colour and has a misty coating a bit like a dusting of icing sugar.
Will take a picture its handy when they are only 30 steps from the kitchen door!
Dont be mistaken by the leaves in the picture they are from the holly tree beside the sloe's.

Don't try them for taste either, they are not poisonous but will dry the inside of your mouth in an instant We used to fall for it every time as kids when offered one with the damsons (these are small damsons honest)

Gin good alcohol???? the result of fermentation is a strong liquor tasting drink, very sweet and potent.....

Damsons picked and pricked earlier and are now pickling nicely with six litres of cheapest vodka and 12oz of sugar.

Like a very small blue plum / grape with a sort of white haze on it. Very spikey tree!

I read that after you take the gin out it makes a good drink if you put any type of cider in it's place and save it for a couple of weeks, really potent scrumpy like mix.

The cidery version is called Slyder, I have mates who make this stuf.

Does anybody know any sensible cider drinkers? It also make a good antiseptic.
