Cutting disc use by date

Just had to purchase some more cutting discs and decided to go for some abracs phoenix 2 black edition.
Received them today and found 2019 stamped on the metal ring, which I believe is the use by date?

If it is the use by date, are shops legally allowed to sell them?

just get them used. im still using a load that aren't even dated from 30 years ago

Yeah, its a use by date...3year shelf life usually, after that the bonding agents apparetly start to break down.


Persoanlly i'd not be concerned about it as its not years over. Give them a quick visual, if they're okay, use them, obviously you'll have the right PPE on anyway.

Of course, ones that are only a few months after manufacture could be worse, if they havnt been stored correctly.

Wouldnt do any harm to voice it to the supplier.... never know they might replace them, and its not worth the grief of sending the others back.

Merely requires the application of common sense. If they're old and dodgy, make sure you're fully covered, plan for the worst, hope for the best.

I have a few boxes like that reserved for special occasions (when I don't care!)

I'm not to worried about using them as I use PPE and the guard is still on the grinder, just more interested in whether shops should be selling out of date discs.

Just finished a batch of Smith and arrow, which haven't been sold in this country for maybe a couple of years? They must have been out of date.

I still have 50 stone cutting blades for stihlsaws 40 years old .not that I should but I sharpen kango hammer chisels with them on the side of blade . you can press like hell and realy flex them and they don't give tried snapping one in half in the vice and its virtualy impossible by hand

Would appear expiry.
Helmets are usually marked with the manufacturing date

I have a load of Clarke thin discs with no date - didn't do much fettling for a few years, but when I started again, I was having to dodge flying discs - I thought I'd snagged them, or too much side load - but no, some of them would go bang as soon as I spun them up - so overalls, glasses, ear defenders and a visor - and try to keep out of the firing line. Most of okay - some just go . .

Thicker cutting (3mm thick) and grinding discs (6mm+) that must be 15/20yr old don't seem to have the same problem - physically more material to hold things together I guess.

We've boxes of ? 3mm disks, I just don't use anymore.

Slitting disks are the way forward.

But not for grinding, well you can, but you've got to be careful....

I never even considered best by dates on discs. Food items possibly, normally if it smells ok I’ll eat it. Do out of date disc smell odd?

If I had two in a row explode on me I'd be sticking the rest of the batch in the bin

I’ve had one disc explode, thought it was the way I was using it. Could have been out if date.

some times bulk buying is not worth it especialy food wise we used to buy lidl boxes for £1.50 of close to date veg you end up throwing out half of it use half but then spend an hour cleaning the fridge where the food has gone soft and weeped leaving sticky readue

Every day is a school day, I have never heard of expiry dates on discs either. I suppose it could also apply to resin bonded stones used in sharpeners.

I found out about disc dates when I went to get some slitting discs from the local engineering supplier & was told they didn’t have any, so I pointed to some on a display. The guy told me he couldn’t sell them as the H & S inspector had just been round & pointed out they were out of date. I said I didn’t know they were dated & he replied “we didn’t know either”
