Is this for an optical application, looks way to clean to be anything else?

Was given this the other day, it was described to me as a:
"Car, or lorry Valve seat cutting tool, it was his Grandfathers and must be worth a lot. As it is an antique, will MIS be able to make money from it?"

Yes, it is a cutting tool, a seat cutting tool. But for taps.

It doesn't move at all, but is sharp.




I will clean it up and MIS will sell it on, but not for much funds.

Taps these days have ceramic seats so you couldn't recut them if you wanted to.

There is indeed.
I have done a few in the past to bring them back to life.
Scary the first time you use one. It feels you are taking a lot off metal off.

But they do a good job.

I've an imperial cabinet makers steel tape , the numbers run from the right to the left so you can mark with your right hand . I used to also have a metric tape in the same manner .. it was stolen by a so called tradesman who was working at our home .

It's only about 8 years ago that the length of a metre was standardized & set in stone ..something to do with frequencies & light travelled

The standardisation of the metre was originally defined in 1889 with a platinum/iridium "standard metre" reference: much more accurate than the yard standards (which, at the time the metre was standardised, were shrinking every year due to the manufacturing methods of the standard).

What has changed over the years is moving from a reference sample (which is inherently subject to changes as materials move) to the distance light travels in a vacuum in a certain amount of time (a universal physical constant that is the same everywhere in the universe). That was adopted in 1983, so a bit more than 8 years ago (there was also an interim standard from 1960 to 1983 that was based on wavelengths of light in krypton-86).

IIRC The yard was set a couple of centuries ago and a gold bar was made to the length it was dimensioned when the gold was 60 oF ( the gold standard ?)

In 1834 the parliament building burnt down. Inside the parliament building was the reference yard that defined how long a yard was. That was the one that every yard was compared to in order to check that they were right. The reference yard melted and for 21 years, no-one really knew how long a yard was. It was redefined based on copies of the original yard, but (to silly levels of precision), it was probably very slightly different to the original one.

The yard was finally properly standardised (via the inch) in 1930 when the inch was defined as being exactly 25.4 mm and therefore it is as accurate a measure as the metre, on which it is based. If there is any measurement errors inherent in the metre, they are present in the inch as well.

Today I acquired rather more planes than I was expecting to:

I had intended to buy the (right-hand side of the photo) 311 from Axminster. Second hand ones seem to be a lot more expensive than buying new and, while I'm sure a good second hand one will be better quality, I decided to save my pennies.

The little one at the top was found in an antique shop: it's a Stanley 103 block plane.

The other two were my grandfather's. I met up with my parents today (first time since Christmas, thanks to lockdown) for their 50th wedding anniversary and my Dad gave them to me as he thought I'd get more use from them than he would. I've already got a #5 (but I don't mind having two!) as well as a couple of #5 size wooden planes (one of which was also my grandfather's) but I don't have a #5½ so I'm sure that will get a fair amount of use. Both need a fair amount of TLC.

Also from the antique shop were a saddle square (with mitre bits in the middle) that I'd wanted for a while and a Woden dowelling jig (complete with manual) that I'm not sure how useful it will be and will need some new metric bushings making (which I can do). Can't resist an interesting old tool me (cue lots and lots of "amusing" comments...)

Was watching a video of the very first Ms flight sim.the other day.
Never really got Into flight Sims though got quite handy with the helis on battlefield back in the day.

Racing/driving Sims did it for me though.

Still a very valid rally sim. Especially with the modding community. Was even able to run it with an occulus rift.

These days. Beam.ng and asseto corsa keep me occupied.
