Perfect get out clause for the insurance company.
It would be no different from any other repair that wasn't to a suitable standard, and contributed to an accident.
A Tyre hasn't reached the end of its life until these things make it look like a hedgehog
But in all seriousness just use them sensibly
Don't put them in slits just clean round puncture holes don't put them to close to the edge of the tread area and don't use them if you drive like a boy racer

No it wouldn't it's impossible for an insurer to deny 3rd party liability based on the condition of the vehicle - the road traffic act specifically prohibits it.
Also, that document linked to in post #18 is a guidance document for repairers giving them a standard to work to. Nothin gin it prevents you from using the string repair kit from a legality perspective.
BTW I carry one of those string repair kits and the CO2 canisters on my bike. The week before last I rescued a guy with a flat rear tyre on his bike and he was in a very precarious spot (slip road feeding a motorway junction roundabout from a 3-lane trunk road). I got him underway in less than 3 minutes and he was very pleased not to be there a moment longer.
If I'm at home I'll fit a proper internal pull-through patch, but if I have to use the string repair out on the road it doesn't bother me. They do seal very well.

If spotted would such a repair be a MOT failure ?
They can't deny third party liability, but it can sway who carries liability, and any comprehensive claim.
And as I said in post #18, they're not illegal as such, they're just not classed as an acceptable repair under the relevant standard.
As with anything insurance, if they can find something to reduce their liability, they'll use it.

Well seems some varying opinions here.
It is not on a performance vehicle a sluggish small diesel hatchback and on decent Michelin sport tyres.
It is in the right area of a tyre to be repaired luckily.
Would go for a for one of those plug patches however not got the facility's for that unfortunately.
I will do some updates as i said and see how it goes with holding pressure stationary and after being driven.

I think they are specific wheels as well (not interchangeable).....I had a 2011 BMW 5 series that had runflats and no spare....it had 2 cannisters of Tyre Weld in the boot....threw them away a few weeks when I noticed they were years out of date.......never had a flat with the BMW.....

Been using plugs for a long while. Our lasses car had 4 screws in the back tyres within 2wks. I use Rema plugs they look like rubber mushrooms. Brilliant little things.
First time was on a trip to Bergen 25miles off the boat in Rotterdam, I get a puncture in my brand new rear tyre. Took 2 large tins to stop the leak the was so big. Rode it for 1k before a Danish lad plugged it, (Cheers Lars
). He used vulcanised rubber glue and a ‘figure eight’ rubber band, did 8k on that repair
The woodyard used the string type, the loaders tyres looked like balding rugs with the amount of them hanging out

ive been using them for years without problems. they do not blow out in use . ask yourself this . you go round doing the speed limit of course 
and drive round corners real slow 
and u have a screw or a nail in your tire and its been there weeks eventually it wears away and your tire goes down .they don't go bang or go down fast so a repair string glued in is hardly likely to come out

Puncture repairs aren't usually that expensive from my experience. I prefer the pull through plug patches which you fit with the tyre removed
Used to be in my tool kit as well, unfortunately current bike has tubed tyres
So a pair of tyre levers and puncture repair kit when I go touring

I've used a lot of these strings in the rear of the bike. Some I have ran down to the cord and others have let go at high speed, I think I was upto 120 in horrific wet conditions just before one failed last year. It is fine until you slow to 60 and handling suddenly goes. I put another string in to get home and this time kept it under 30 for the last mile.
Last 5 years I have been doing my own tyres and proper repairs, so Ive had the oportunity to inspect strings from the inside. After about a month they completely lose their stick and will push in with no effort. A bump could easily offset the tyre pressure and have one out of place. When they are new they take some effort to pull from the inside,need pliers, but not after a month.
Strings do not like slime or excess tyre soap or moisture, if there is any inside the tyre, dont bother trying to do any more miles than to get home.
When I get a puncture these days I will have the tyre off when I get home, or within a week and do it properly. I often have a spare tyre and swap that instead and repair only if the tyre has enough to be worth refitting.
Ive got 3 rears that could be repaired, that I will scrap. There is 10k miles left between them, road5 and two roadtec 01's.
I dont like repairing fronts, even proper repairs. Fronts see a lot of deflection from hard braking and I can imagine that ripping any repair out. Fronts rarely puncture and replacements are under 30 quid.

there's a product which is an aftermarket goo which you put in the tyres and rotate to some spec to spread it about evenly. Personally I think it's crap as it makes them hard to repair and can unbalance them
Anyhow I only came across this brand (name escapes me but it's bright blue) because my brother bought it. I was reading the instructions and apparently it's used and endorsed by Royal mail!

Luckily only 5 miles away from home and could pump it up to 2.8bar and get 2 miles before it reached 1.8 bar and I had to stop to top it up.. only had a stupid foam canister thing and I have always been told not to use them unless your life is in danger, not sure how accurate that is.

my wife’s car failed mot for out of date tyre weld...
I don't get that - was it a taxi test or a normal MOT.
Because the spare is not part of the MOT test (but part of a taxi compliance test in some boroughs - but not all)
