It is sagging a bit but it’s actually pretty sound, a mate here is a roofer and has checked it over, obviously he was all for replacing the lot but accepts that with a bit of maintenance it last several more years yet. He’s starting tomorrow.

The roofer is starting tomorrow! The underlying structure is sound timber, it’s just that over here they generally use Chestnut (around here anyway) and it twists and bends something rotten.

And I've seen examples hundreds of year old sain. And others not.

Yours is at the base. Less of an issue. It's not the ridge.

We have a bit of rot in the ridge at the other end, but surprisingly as I said earlier most of it is in very good condition, at least we don’t have termites round here

Slab polished, he finished at 10pm last night, and took off his shoes for the final check over and fettle. Coming back later today to cut the expansion joints.

I would have thought any mastic, just to fill the holes to stop crap ingress.

How deep are the cuts?

If be tempted to masking tape the horizontal sides of the gap just for a tidy finish.

Haven’t had a close look yet Mat, was getting dark and the Stihl saw had left water everywhere. Anyway, are you suggesting I’m rubbish with a mastic gun?

As Matt says. Mask it off. Fill it up high and use a bit of rubber or silicone tool to push it in and remove excess.

I hate sealing but got pretty good at it over the years

Expansion joints cut today, though they’ve left me to mastic them - any recommendations please?

‘expansion joints’? Are they cut right through, or just an inch deep or so? If they are shallow I’d imagine they are more crack lines, or what ever the proper name is, so if your slab shrinks and cracks, it does it in a neat controlled place.
