small casting foundry

popped up my brothers today as he had his foundry out and I wanted 2 castings doing that I made patterns for . its a grit valve for a blasting pot when its finished . ive made another in ally and 3 in steel heres a few pictures of the valve and a house sign he made fore someone

If you rig up a way of heat treating the ally castings it machines much better

me with the sneekers on stood back it will cast alloy brass and iron using welsh coke as fuel u can use gas and oil if u wanted

Yes they will but consumption is horrendous. One iron foundry I use is oil powered and the other propane gas. Proprietor says it costs a fortune for a melt in iron so even though ally is a much dearer material iron castings are dearer

I used to regularly melt cast iron with my Morgan No 5 oil fired furnace, until my next door neighbour sold his garden for a house and I ended up with someones kitchen 10 foot away from my foundry

I changed over to gas to reduce the smell but it was hopeless for iron, which is why I got my 100 kva induction furnace that I am in the final stages of setting back to work after 13 years in storage - full story (and all the tears!) here :

So far, after the 'rebirth' I've just done a single brass melt to prove things are working. I'm still doing things like improving my earth bonds between the various units (Generator, Chiller, Furnace Driver and Furnace Body) and the steel work of the three buildings involved. It is literally only in the last couple of days that things have come together and I've got it working - it's been a LONG project !

Tomorrows job is running a load of 70 mm CSA bonding cables and crimping tags and drilling holes !

Before I moved I was casting most metals, aluminium, brass, bronze and iron. Not tried it yet but as one of my 'Furnace Bodies' in an inverting type (where you clamp the mould on top, and the whole kaboosh inverts dumping the metal into the mould) I want to try stainless steel as you will not actually be exposed to the high radiant temperatures with that method. I also do have a second 'body' that tilts the melt more conventionally.

Is there enough coke in there for one melt or did you have to keep topping it up, (i've got a plastic dustbin 3/4 full of coke from my old forge, I can feel a new project coming on)
