My new fellows gear Shaper

got a fellows gear Shaper coming Monday
Capacity up to 33” diameter
Came off a US aircraft carrier. Hopefully it will earn some money!
Comes with plenty of tooling and change wheels.
I reckon I ll be flooding eBay with loads of 127 t change wheels

My hobber's just a baby, up to 12DP and just under 5" diameter capacity. Great quality machine and in very nice condition but only for small stuff.

Does your shaper come with cutters? They are bloody expensive just like hobs.

Not surprised. I was about to shell out £300 on a 22DP hob when a job lot of 12 came up for £120. Imagine my joy when one of them turned out to be a brand new 22DP

I have a set of gears here with a 127 in it. Trouble is, I have no idea what they're from - I took a punt on them when I had the R & A lathe but they didn't fit.

Been lying unused ever since, I kept them when the lathe went, on the basis I might find a use for them in some unspecified future project.

Measure them. 127 tooth gears sell very well.

The set of 11 gears consists of 24 > 127. What do you reckon would be a fair price to ask - I don't want to split them.

To think of it - gears are a major part of our lives - for everything, but it's pretty much a closed shop, with only mass manufacturing being "cheap" or at least accessible. If you look at car or bike gearboxes, the aren't just gears, they have dogs or cones attached, which makes changing or replacing hugely expensive - you'd think there might be a niche in the market a gearcutting machinist could fill, but it doesn't happen. A neighbour has a gearcutter, he's offered me the use of it - but really, I would't know where to start, and it would be a long journey.

I have a access to a maxi cut, not much tooling though. Cutters seem to be big ££££ and dont have a full gear change set yet. Do your change gears have an odd kind of 3 sided centre hole to drive them?

As a great many of the old Boxfords were Imperial, and as present day & future parts will be Metric, I would be confident that there would be interest in the 127/100 main conversion gear as they are not easy to find, and you will have to dig deep in your wallet to acquire it if you are fortunate to find one; that's the main drawback for most Imperial Boxford owners.

But then, you will also need about eight or so other gears to cut all of the metric threads currently available. I already have the 127/100 conversion gear ( sorry Pressbrake1 ) and seven of the eight threading gears, which are 48, 44, 40, 36, 32, 28, and 24. The only one I'm missing is a 26 tooth gear.

Is it worthwhile to have a lathe which will do both ?
