It’s a motorbike thing - to stop an engine turning when you need to put some force on the end of a crank or something on the drivetrain, like a front/rear sprocket. In a car you could put it in gear and the weight of the car is enough to lock the engine.

how does the dummy plug work , does it just hold against the top of the piston , if so I think I would stick with the rope , bigger area to spread the load over ,, but Im always open to new ideas.
Yeah, if what you were trying to unstick was properly jammed you could put a fair bit of force through the spark plug thread - I guess at least the rope pushes against the whole head (but as the post demonstrates is not without its own problems

many thanks ,, it looks like a fair idea , but I dont think I would have the nerve to use one , not with a rattly gun on a big nut , Is that extension to where the electrode would be metal , or plastic ?
bit of delrin would be tempting ,
