A question for the balanceists

I will be attempting to build a crank balancing machine in the near future, I would also like to be able to balance some of the machine rotors if possible. Electrics are sorted I bought a Dual plane dynamic balance system DP Balancer from TECHNOLAB. Now the rub, would a bare lathe bed anchored to the floor be a suitable base to mount balancer stands? The reason I ask is most balance machines weigh many tons and wondered if there was a reason for it.

Basically looking for something to mount these on that wont throw the readings.

In your sketch the vibration sensor is measuring relative vibration between the base and the pendulum suspension unit. You really want this to be the absolute vibration the suspension unit is exhibiting hence, as stated above, you need a rigid structure. Either extremely heavy or bolted to something that doesn't vibrate. Failing that you would need to know the vibration levels of the structure and the suspension unit to calculate actual vibration on the rotor. Sizing of the structure/bed depends on the mass of the rotor and the likely imbalance you will be putting through it.

I had my eyes on this one below off a Denford .Perhaps look out for a pair , go wider with the stands and straddle the pair, then bolt them down onto a concrete block

Its amazing how much influence a even a vehicle can have. I tried to level my lathe up through the day, had to stop and do it later at nigh as vehicles 50dys away were moving the bubble. A sensor is going to be even more affected by such. Worth bearing in mind when you come to use it if you have heavy machinery moving about the yard.

its a heavy metal mass that's bolted to an isolated concrete base of significant proportions

If your sensors are sensitive enough ,you can pick up all sorts of things. We had a very sensitive bit of equipment a couple of years ago that would give some very strange readings occasionally. That was until an avid surfer hit the nail on the head by pointing out the anomalies coincided with high tide. We are about 7 miles inland....

I live in the Vale of York, there’s 2-6" of peat between 5-8’ depth. Depending on water table the vibrations change in strength and duration when a large or heavy vehicle passes.

I remember Erimus engines, a local auto engineering shop getting a new crankshaft grinding machine, I thought they were trying to reach Australia!! foundation hole was about 10 feet squares and around 8 feet deep ready for concrete, Funny little chap that ran the place, usually filthy with a oily shiny boiler suit, But when you saw him out and about, he wore a thick tweed suit with plus fours and a monocle!! On the theme of solid foundations,, At a prostate cancer meeting a while ago. a guest speaker was talking about some new treatment machine needing a concrete foundation around a hundred feet deep!!!!!

Measuring the pull which should be prettt noticeable.
