Fuel pipe

Evening.
I need to get some new fuel pipe for my bike.
The barbed nipple of the tap is 7mm as is the filter and the nipple on the carb.
Should I get a slightly smaller inside diameter pipe? If so how much smaller?
Also any recommendations of fuel pipe supplier?

6mm sounds common, most car parts suppliers should have it, rubber I assume? or ebay, or a local garage, take the filter with you to test size,

Let us all know how you get on - I bought a length on ebay a few months ago, fitted and worked fine. Took the carbs off the other day and it was rock hard - obviously not made for petrol...

The pipe on mine has gone hard, it’s the clear type pipe.
Looked on flea bay and there some rubber braided type that looks quite popular.

The pipe on mine has gone hard, it’s the clear type pipe.
Looked on flea bay and there some rubber braided type that looks quite popular.

The clear, cord impregnated type that was always used years ago was never any good for petrol, and allways went hard.

Hi, Be careful where you get it from, you need j30 r10 spec usually Cohline or Gates brand. There's a lot of counterfeit stuff around, if they can counterfeit the hose they can do it for the printing as well. Try and get it from a reputable dealer, two places I've heard are good are Demon Tweeks or our own AJLelectronics of this parish.

Another cautionary tale.
A few years ago I bought some genuine Suzuki fuel hose, proper stuff. The nice thing about the real Suzuki hose is that it's thin-wall and very flexible, and a perfect fit for the fuel tap, etc.
A couple of years ago I was removing the tank and as I pulled the hose off the nipple it just fell apart.
Close examination of the remaining hose showed it was starting to split along its entire length and would have failed very soon, probably on the next journey out.
The problem, I reckon, was that the hose (though genuine) was New Old Stock and had probably languished on some dealer's shelf in a back room for years. Rubber deteriorates in storage, and more rapidly in service, and if this rubber was old enough it would have pre-dated the witches brew that is modern fuel, and reacted more severely to it than a modern fuel hose.
I've since discovered that Aircraft Spruce is a source of Tygon fuel pipe for a reasonable price.

the genuine Gates fuel hose will take this carp they call petrol.....also Diesel.......
I buy it by the 15m roll........use it on everything from bikes t cars t tractors and mowers.......
I replaced the orig hoses on my mower at least 3 years ago with the gates brand and it's still soft and flexy.......

WARNING, some original fuel hose feel flexy but inside they have all split into smaller slither's......
just a fire waiting to happen.........
when I did mower repairs full time they got new hoses and was priced into the job.....
no options new hoses or take the thing elsewhere.......in S W France we also had extremes of heat as well.....

when I finally get around to finishing my Indians they will get Goodridge aircraft ST/Steel flexy hoses.....stuff the cost and originality....

R9 is good enough if its not immersed.

Gates hose swear by it . Ive tried others and they all show deterioration after a year. Just brought my old car out of storage for work and the gates hose is still supple and un swolen after 20 years.

1/4" (6.35mm) is common, which would go nicely on a 7mm spigot. I've had good experience with Cohline 2240 fuel hose from here:-

I think someone posted this explanation of the "SAE J30 Rxx" ratings on this forum before - www.volksbolts.com/faq/fuelhose.htm

The specifications are not sequential, i.e. R10 does not supersede R9 as they are for different uses, and so on.

2nd the above comments. I bought a full real of 6mm (1/4") fuel hose, from the local agri stores. Within 3weeks everything I’d fitted it to, had cracked. Took it back what bit I had back, apparently their whole stock was gash.

Ethanol in "petrol" isn't helping, a lot of older hoses won't last long - and it's not so good for lots of other bits, O rings etc., PLUS it takes on water from the atmosphere - lots of bikes left over winter will have rust forming in the tanks

We buy fuel line by the 100 metre. It's the clear plastic type. All fuel pipe now goes hard because it appears the ethanol is a bit agressive. You just have to renew it on a regular basis and it's cheap. It all goes brown/yellow which is one of the reasons we drain fuel from karts when customers store them with us. Rubber seems even worse with the introduction of ethanol. We charge £1.50 per metre.
