no answer to what your trade is yet so who knows whats available . a security guard at b and q or some supermarket if your put out to grass or is there other firms with jobs available depending on your skills

cant understand this you pay some that knows what he doing say 30.000 a year make him go put another person in his place for 20,000 yes save 10,000 a year but add in the pay out then you have to spend 3 months training the new bloke after a year hes off to another job better paid would it not be better to keep the orignal person at the higher rate that causes you less hassel ?

becomes of managers and poeple doing the highering and fireing that dont know **** about the job and just know how to save money on paper

I downsized our business activity 13 years ago.

Yes... I was earning a fortune - but I was afraid I was going to "burn out". I was 40 years old - and had no life except work - and I did lots of work - nothing but work!

I was working dawn to dusk - seven days a week - no time off - no holidays.

I am still self employed - do less - and yes - earn less.

I still do about 40-50 hrs a week (or did till the lockdown).


But the real truth was - I was wasting some of the money we were earning - "easy come - easy go".

I now spend less - have less - and I am seeing the benefit of the money I earned "killing myself" in the early years.


Income is not everything lads - it is not!

Life is short...

id all ready cut back on work and select my jobs before this crap started .3 or 4 hours a day will do me as can collect pension in a few month its the youngsters I feel sorry for who have commitments and family or getting jobs and even a house

I am with you on the above - it is the youngsters I feel sorry for - over this current problem.

If there is a shrinking demand for labour - if us old folk "chuck the towel in".

It would create jobs for younger people.

I didnt mean it as a stupid suggestion...

If we all took early retirement, say 60 or even 55, just think of the jobs it would create.....but it means bringing down the pension age....I cant do the maths but someone can...I just wonder........(and killing a few off with a virus would help)

All previous economic downturns have caused high unemployment in younger people.

We are not looking at a reccession - I see the full "depression of the 30's" coming...

I basically did the same....was working 7 days a week and the only time I wasn't working was when I was sleeping.

Chucked it in 8 years ago and I've never been happier. I decided they'd probably run me into the ground then make me redundant anyway...maybe I had 10 years...maybe 15 years....but I figured I'd prefer the timing to be my choice either way.

I reckon I now work half the hours...but its for myself. If I decide to work a 7 day week I get paid for it....none of this working you're rocks off all year and hoping to get a bonus nonsense....nop I want paying for what I do thank you very much.

My advice is work for yourself...only regret you might have is not doing that sooner.

Thanks everyone , I started out as an apprentice fitter with atomic energy and ended up as looking after ac and ref plus heating systems for specialist vehicles,so got F Gas for refrigerants etc, not done any machining for years but restore classic cars for hobby so still pretty hands on. Today so had 1 offer from a customer that theyd make a place for me which Is an amazing pick me up and just shows treat customers with respect and honesty they remember it .

Figuring out that a lower stress job maybe 3 or 4 days a week would be ok to keep me ticking over without raiding pension pots .Had an old apprentice friend visit me today in my workshop and we put the world to rights. This is a great place for no punches pulled honest advice again many thanks to all who've taken the time to add a comment

Too many people I know are "living the dream" and heading into a train wreck. Living beyond their means more like it. Far too often the guiding principle is winning the lottery, winning the Bingo or making a claim. Wonder how many have tried living. It has worked for me so far.

No offence is ment by this but how do we young folks get the experience too know what we are doing if we cant get the job in the first place.

I find its not so much of a problem with my industry as it burns people out well ahead of time but you get paid well so a lot of people leave or retire very early. Problem has now emerged that the skills and knowledge arent being passed on in the same way anymore as the older guys arent there too teach us younger ones.

We need too find a balance somewhere too it all.

One chief engineer ounce told me when i had screwed up particularly badly " the most experienced guys are the ones that screw up, because they then know how to fix thier screw up, what they should have done and what they shouldn't have done"

In my late thirties - I watched a few lads about me - nice lads - get divorced or get drink/health problems. Due to overwork.

These lads were really recentfull - they had worked their socks off - given the wifes everything they wanted and more - and the wives still left them.


My advice too - is go work for yourself... Spend less...


Most people take a downshift in workload due to ill health - the clever thing is to do it - before you get ill...


There is a saying "richest man in the graveyard"...
