Making hinges

Hi everyone, I haven't been on here now for some time, but my question for you knowledgeable lot can hopefully help me out.
I plan on making some hinges out of mild steel pipe and solid round bar/pipe at a Max diameter of 10mm/1cm. What sizes would I need to make these as it can't have much play but still move freely.

faster to buy tail gate hinges , if thats what your making , this sort of stuff costs pence ,, just saying have a good look about before you start really . Its easy to get carried away and spend a long time making something .

Thank you for the recommendation but for what I need it for, I just need mild steel pipe and solid round. I do things that I've seen on YouTube but I have no metal qualifications or anything so not sure on sizes I would need and the video doesn't explain what I need

Google 'em first - tail gate hinges is a good suggestion- you can get simple hinges dirt cheap - cut them down if you need to. Even rather more precision versions, bushed, fitted with grease nipples etc for welding on.

Pipe isn't perfectly round, and may even have a seam inside. Round bar can have any tolerance on depending on what you get. So you might cobble something that works well enough for a gate . . . but crap if it's a precision fitting door. Or you might have stuff that doesn't fit together and needs machining . . . and seizes solid in 6 months . . . No need to reinvent the wheel when someone has made it work already

You might be best with some CDS tube as it has no seam down the inside so you won't have to bore it out. I've done similar though they weren't hinges at the approx size you mention. Will have a hunt for the offcuts and measure them for you. One of the solids fitted perfectly into the tube.

Just buy some from RS or Brundles, they are not worth the trouble to make them

Not as buried as I thought.

Tube is 14.29mm OD with 10.23mm ID and the bar is 10mm. Get bright bar not black and it will be perfectly round. The black stuff usually isn't exactly round.

Have a look on ebay, they sell it in short lengths but the cost will probably be more than buying hinges.

‘Perfectly round’ is probably a tad over exaggerated. You get some better than others, but it certainly isn’t perfectly round.

edit: so, I’ve done some reading.
Bright Drawn Bar normally meets h11 tolerance, which for 10-18mm dia is -0.07mm. So pretty good.
Roundness is allowed to be 0.5x the tolerance and never more than the tolerance.
