Asbestos. Instant death???

I've been going through boxes of ex MOD stuff that was left by the previous owner of our house. I've found a cardboard tube of "Payentite Jointing....Graphited Asbestos Jointing for Steam, Petrol and water" 4 sq feet of 1/32 thick stuff. Looks lovely. No other info on it other than "Kit ref B30"

Is this dangerous stuff left over from the days before H&S?

Its great stuff , still handy and still used on high pressure joints , leave it in the roll and put it away ,, one day you may need it ,, till then its eating no grass ... easier looking at it than looking for it.

I was looking around for something to make an exhaust gasket for a joint a couple of feet downstream of the head. Flange is as crooked as a Chinese straight thing!

usually a copper gasket , or a cast steel ring , depending on the make up of the joint.

There was some sort of exemption regarding asbestos and steam joints, as there was no substitute that worked as well, not sure if that's still the case.

Going by what I've been told in the past, asbestos that's found within say wet/damp material is fairly safe to handle,...it's when it's dried out/becomes airborne, that's when it's really dangerous to folk.
To think that early gas masks used asbestos to help trap dangerous gases, obviously such masks prevented a solider from dying there and then in the field but how many died of lung cancer many years later I wonder.

Asbestos joints are far superior to the new CAF type.

CAF joints I agree are far superior to NAF the current ones to use.

CAF compressed asbestos fibre
NAF non asbestos fibre sometimes called CNAF.

I worked in Chatham Dockyard in the sixties and seventies. At the start of that time we would strip out boiler fittings at the same time as the laggers were removing asbestos lagging. We used to throw it around like confetti. However by the middle of the seventies de-lagging was only carried out by the laggers in 'silent hours' when nobody else was about. they also used nylon overalls, air fed hoods and airlocks on the compartments they were working in. Amazing how things change. In addition through the rest of my MoD career I was periodically monitored.

I've often wondered about the amount of asbestos dust that must have been in the environment from car brake shoes and clutch linings until the modern, none asbestos materials came into use.

I don't mind asbestos 2k lead and kiln dried sand im still here after 65 years and my chest and lungs are in good nick even though I used to smoke 60 fags a day for 25 years just wear a decent mask and be carefull . asbestos isn't an instant death it takes donkeys years before it rears its ugly head

father inlaw died of cancer his job was doing brake linings on busses and they allways blew them out with an airline

Lead doesn't scare me, but asbestos does! And 2k paints...

That 2k thread really highlighted the danger, didn't even know what it was before but no chance I'm going anywhere near it now without PPE.
