Engine rebuild grease and lube

Can anyone recomend a brand of grease or lube for an engine reassemble.. i used to use a red grease years ago but cannot remember the name and i think some lube with hi zinc content for the cam, this is mainly for vw air cooled engines.

I use either graphogen or Lucas assembly lube on my race engines with no problems.

Is what I use but I always use a decent high zinc content breaking in oil on run up/dyno first

I just use engine oil and only coat cams/lifters in Wynns with a paintbrush. I would value a priming stick and cordless more than some of theses assembly greases.

I also used a battery drill and makeshift driver to prime my big-power bike engine after building it. Still going strong 13yrs later.

If you're assembling the engine it might stand for a good while before it's fired up. Assembly lube ensures there's an initial coating on moving parts regardless of how long the interval between assembly and running.

Plus aggressive cams need a break in procedure as to condition the surface as I've found out the hard way

I built my race engines using graphogen all parts are coated with graphite then I cranked the engines over without the ignition leads on and fitted a pressure gauge to make sure the oil has completely run through the engine and up to pressure new camshafts are provided with red cam lube so that was used as well so when engine started everythings fully coated nothing left to chance

These were boat engines, marine mechanic 'trained' me. Max RPM 2250, diesel.

Not really convinced any of these goo`s stay where they are put, crank or turn an engine over a few times setting timing or degreeing a cam and most of its wiped off, buy a new or recon engine and you wont find any assembly grease/lube anywhere. As Woody says mental cams, spring pressures and solid lifters in yanks are a problem, break in techniques vary but the general consensus is to avoid idle/tickover on startup.

Well, being diesel, they take a fair bit of cranking over to get diesel to the injectors, so I guess you've got oil pressure by the time it eventually starts.

I'll ask the motor racing company next door their thoughts..

They certainly build engines to much finer tolerances than I do though.

It gos against the grain starting a newly built engine and giving it pain but that's how it's done.

when I built mine I made a test bed and ran the engine at medium revs for an hour then ran it round a large field for an hour before taking it racing and gave it some chance of running it in then thrashed the bolox of it racing ran the engine for 3 seasons without any problem then flogged the car .the guy who bought it did well and it gave him good results without it giving any problems

Gardner, I read somewhere, years ago, would attach a PTO to the crank, and without fuel, run the engine in for hundreds of hours.

It's the same as everything in life you have to suck it and see ,opinions are like ar5eholes ,everyone has one.
I've had a bit of good luck with what I'm doing the same as others have with theirs.
