Noise from next door

To explain, my front door is to the side of the house, and has a pitched roof ‘porch’, which us an extension of my roof, across, and attached to my neighbours house’s side wall. The underside is only enclosed by wood slatting.

Of late I’ve noticed that their grandkids banging inside the house, now appears to be amplified by this bit of roof/porch. Either I never noticed it before, or when they added the external cladding, they have created a ‘boombox’.

Is there anything I could do to kill this effect?

Not as easy as it sounds , maybe they have gotten noisier , or you have become more aware for some reason , more time in the house springs to mind , but acoustic isolation as a retrofit step is tricky ,, could you post a pic
the two things that spring to mind ,
ask the kids not to bang on the wall ,, depends on neighbours / kids etc , but remember they will grow up and the problem will vanish , thats a bonus .
Or increase the ambient noise in your house , ie leave a radio on some where so that the sudden change in sound levels in your house are not as noticeable .
From working in the AV game Ive come across such issues , but at least yours are only going to be short term.

Yes, because it is short term (they will hopefully move out back to their own place in the non too distant future), it’s not a big problem, just something I’ve started to notice. Also, since my neighbour has taken on so much family wise this year, I wouldn’t add to her woes, unless it started to irritate me. Just wondered about anything I could do to reduce the nouse.

I have a carport which has an extention built over it and a garage to the side. If my neighbour unlocks his gate that is attached to my garage, it sounds like he is in the room. I can hear him put rubbish in his bins too. We get on well so it's not a problem but It's surprising how sound gets transmitted sometimes.

I think these issues are a very common problem. I suffer much the same here 1930s semi with paper thin party wall and next door have hard floors throughout. The kids next door drop something or scrape the dining room chairs across the floor (a pet hate of the wife) and you would think they were in our house.
Their penchant for on occasion loud karaoke parties doesn't do much for neighbourly relations but on the whole i live and let live although i have had to go and ask them to turn it in

On a slightly more serious note (sorry!) it might be worth hanging some thick sheets or tarpaulin from the roof, in front of their wall?

It won't last the winter but, as you suggest, it will likely change soon (schools back in August)

3-4 years ago we all had external insulation added, but obviously not inside the ‘void’. The insulation now extends about 6-8” beyond where the walks used to join this roof. This canopy consists of a couple of solid concrete beams between the buildings, a wooden roof frame, and cement(?) tiles on the roof. The roof is foreshortened at the back, with a wood tongue and groove panel at the back.

The inside is empty (hubby used to store his wood stash up there), except for a few 4 x 2’s I need to get down, but otherwise it’s just a shell.

I moved house myself three months ago, because I simply could not stand the neighbours noise any more.

It was a semi, with a big garage I'd built myself, a large drive, nice back yard, and I loved the house, but the party wall was made of a single sheet of plasterboard, or so it seemed.

A succession of noisy neighbours over the years drove me up the wall, capped off when 'the psycho bioch from hell' moved in two years ago. Her voice could cut glass, and when her and him let go I could hear every word they screamed at each other. Which happened several times a week, hours long arguments, hurling absolute teenage drivel at each other. I went round twice to ask them to keep it down, he was very apologetic, she was exactly how her voice sounded, course, obnoxious, self important etc

l rented the place out for 7 years, moved abroad, and the tenant I had insulated several of the adjoining walls because of kids crying, screaming etc

And then the day came when my life abroad fell apart, 3 years ago, and I had to move back in, and I simply hated it.

I'm now living in a detached bungalow, with minimal parking, single garage, in need of lots of work and I paid well over the odds for it.....

.....but there are no noisy screaming retarded neighbours just inches away from me.

I've never understood this penchant the Brits have for joining houses together, semis, terraced, link detached, what is it with them???

its the beams between the buildings that work like the string on a bit of string and two paper cup telephone , that you may have played with , its a direct transfer and a solid mechanical link , which means its a very efficient way of transmitting vibration , which is what form the noise takes.
ill have a bit of a think , but its a very tough problem to sort out , Ill revert back to my original post ,, turn up your background noise ,,, its not a solution , but it will lessen the noticeable effect .

as an experiment , try hanging a curtain or the likes against the inside wall where the concrete roof beams touch your wall , this may help , in the old days it was common in student houses having a party to put a mattress against the door ,,
Idea being that the sound waves leaving the wall , which is probably what your hearing will be attenuated by the curtain , if that works , or helps then a wall hanging may be the thing to try .. it wont solve the problem but it may help ,, at least you have the knowledge that the kids will grow up and the problem will end.

I would dearly love a detached house ive told my kids to buy detached if they can when the time comes. The lass next to us is a school teacher she's got a voice like someone ripping lino shes always ordering their kids like she was in the class room and it comes straight through the walls.
Great to hear you found a bit of peace not a lot to ask really in the grand scheme of things.
