Calipers; Vernier Caliper, Digital Caliper - or Digital Vernier...?

I've always referred to calipers that use a Vernier scale as Vernier calipers, and those with a digital display as digital calipers; the 'Vernier' refers to the Vernier scale, not the fact that it is a caliper in this case - something can't be Vernier AND digital.

It now seems that many are referring to those with a digital display as 'digital Vernier calipers', which in mind is incorrect.

It seems that the Scottish Qualifications Agency is doing it too...

I always try to refer to the digital ones as digital calipers and the vernier ones as vernier calipers. I guess it would be easier to refer to them all as just "calipers", but that leads to confusion with the non-measuring type.

Some absolute (as opposed to incremental) digital position scales use the vernier principle to give the absolute position, so it's entirely possible that a pair of digital calipers might be digital vernier calipers.

I wouldn't worry, things often get combined into a single group of similar objects. Can I borrow your calipers, verniers, digi verniers etc generally gets the same outcome and I dont think anyone would bother correcting unless of course you actually wanted some inside or outside calipers (but we'll not go into that!)

It is quite funny when you've got a pair of vernier calipers and someone asks to borrow a vernier expecting a digital caliper and gets a vernier! Soon sifts out those who think they can use measuring equipment and those that actually can... I keep one in my site kit for that very reason!

Far from it... I'm procrastinating whilst WFH!!!

Its funny though, some of the pupils I teach (they'd be at least 14 or so before I'd introduce them to it) are able to get to grips with the Vernier scale far quicker than I'd anticipated - and prefer it to the 'digital' one.

I have handed my Fathers Mitutoyo Vernier Caliper to anyone that asks for a Vernier many times, and the Vernier micrometer too. I often refer to cheap digital caliper's as very-nears.

Yup, I'm the same - prefer my Mitutoyo's to the Aldi/Lidle £10 ones I have.

I have given up with cheap digital caliper's and keeping the digital Mitutoyo tucked away for best, I just use the good one all the time as I look after the cheap ones just as well.

In theory there could be one that did both but I e never seen one

I think my Mitutoyo verniers are probably my most used. And they never need batteries!
Annoyingly though I lost one of the screws from the end of the depth guage.

Those look the same as my Fathers and the case. I might have a spare screw somewhere.

If you do that would be superb. Its difficult to see in the photo but the the screws should be counter sunk and I only had a cheese head screw to replace the missing one.
It works perfectly fine but my OCD keeps nagging me that it doesn't match and isn't original!

I had a look, there is one CSK screw and a stop plate in with my jewelers screwdrivers. I think they may be off a Clarke dial caliper, is your backplate threaded?

a digital vernier......I'm guessing you can probably get that as an application to show your screen resolution off.......a bit like when you used to have to align printer cartridges years ago. I just use the battery free variety of measuring stick.

What's all the hate for batteries? I've had the same battery in my mitutoyos for 5 years now and it's very rare for me to remember to turn them off.

Well of course: but I bet it's only down to the 'feel' or 'action' of them. I've had some of the cheapies in our calibration lab at work and within their capabilities they are just as accurate as £200 Mitu's (assuming you stick to the 2 decimal places). It's the quality of the sliding parts that makes the difference in use.
