Shovel handles

It’s a tool so hopefully in the right place.

My favourite shovel, a metal handled one and super comfy to use.

Anyway, the wooden handle insert is falling to bits but I can’t see if they can be bought. See the pic, all I want is the wooden bit and possibly a new rivet. All my searches turn up complete handles with the shaft.

Any ideas please?

A bit of broom shaft and a 6" nail does the job

They can be found, but it is a pain.

Carefully remove the wooden remains, the rivets will the push out of the sides.

Get some nice hard wood, beech is my choice. Hickory as well. Soft wood will not be suitable.

Turn a new handle on lathe, refit.

A nice sunday morning job.

get a nice bit of hickory wood and make your own it only needs drilling out and a rod putting through and riveting over . even without a lathe just use a wood plane nowt wrong with a bit of hand work. I just put a complete handle on my 1920 s shovel and riveted it on . its light made of quality steel much better than the new ones .there crap

They normally get a second life with a bit of steel tube welded in place of the wood.

I did that to my favourite shovel last month. Its still my favourite shovel.

Thanks chaps. Got a nice bit of hickory and a hand plane. Will give that a go.

Can't stand a D handle on a fork/spade/shovel.

I always go for a T handle (fat paws).

They are a bit thin on the ground now.

Never understood why? D handles became the norm?

Thanks for the offer. A wood lathe isn’t something I possess although that might change once the new workshop is up.

Going to try a bit of Hickory and a hand plane tomorrow. See how I get on. If it all goes to pot I will take you up on the offer.

here's mine . the rivet - cut of bolt through with washers peened over is hardly noticeable

I have another one with a decent t handle gave it to the daughter and told her not to leave it out to rot. the steel is of a hell of a good hard quality and thin one was me dads and other was father inlaws .im 65 and remember dad using it when I was 5

Simple job would be to turn a new wooden one from two sections glued together with paper on the split line, Turn to shape, split the two halves and reglue properly around the existing rivet pin,

that's what I bought just had to cut it down as it was longer than the original and then shave it to fit the shovel with the wood plane
