hi lads, been a while, iv,e been doing a spot of tig root, filler and 6013 capping on 8" recently. ill try my best to explain amps etc as i go. my eyes are a bit sore at the moment so just to explain, if most of your work involves positional welding in a shop then your pipefitter ain,t doing his job. f/j

Do you always grind the stop/starts of the tig root..what's the advantage in doing that ?

ive got some stainless to do soon. i will put some pictures on as soon as i get round to it. its a 125 stub to an eccentric reducer to a 63mm stub. 4mm wall. what sort of amps do you think? root and cap atb scott

The edges of the tacks on the root should be ground back to a feather edge (Until they go blue from the heat of the grinder) so that you do not get a 'cold spot' when running the remainder of the root pass in. All stop/starts and tacks should be dealt with like this. A lot don't bother The root pass will melt into the edge of the tack.
Stops leaks basically!

We could do with you at our place F/J, there's a steam pipe above my machine and almost every weld is leaking profusely.
It's not even under much pressure, it's just a vent pipe from the presses!
Damned thing bangs all shift long too, very, very loud

But I used the Portamig Weldequip, that 5m torch was a bit of a stretch but I got there!

Hehe, really, nothing to do with me, I'm just a lowly button and pedal pusher.
Not sure who did it tbh, our onsite contractors came out today to perform a 'repair' on the leak above me......yeah, that worked! The leak stopped for all of 10 mins til the press vented again!

Same applies for MMA cap Wyn, nice feather back to run in to, no nasty build up, sweet to the eye, should look like a continuous weld, also greatly reduces possibility of slag traps at stop starts............

thanks lads a warm welcome as always, wyn i don,t always grind the starts but i suppose i should, if you don,t grind you must stay at the start point a little longer getting the pool up to speed. if the pipe is x/ray i will always grind to blue as paul mentions. scotty thanks for your time, glad to hear your plugging away at pipe, as regards amps on your stainless 40 should be a good starting point for nice clean metal, if 4mm is sch 10 then i would be doing 2 runs and a nitrogen or argon purge. when you get some pics start a thread,look forward to discussing it with you and the lads. w/e that was low. wooz wheres my bloody peelers good to hear from you mate. ive given up on the lottery runnach im earning more welding: aye right. no arc eye mate just tired eyes.heres more on that spool f/j

the way this spool is welded gives me one 5g butt on the branch lads, the rest are roll outs f/j

only on the flat fillers, this is 5g lads, the roots were 130 amps, followed by a 3.25 flat filler at 120 amps, bohler fox sum, this gives a stable surface for a 4mm, also rolled, fox sum up to the lines ready for a fox sum cap at 100 amps f/j

As usual excellent work f/j, am looking forward to starting a tig pipe course at college, just out of interest what type of weave movement do you use during your caps, figure 8, Christmas tree..?

sean im not sure if you mean tig cap or stick, i think i posted a pic of the pattern i use with stick, if not ill dig it out , tig is very similar but is done by pinching in and out with thumb and forefinger, its a shallow dish or arc on the rise....... tell you what ill dig the pic out. heres more of the 5g on that spool, thanks for your time sean. good luck with the course, flange,

Sorry, I should have made myself a little more clear about my query, What type of weave pattern do you use to get the ripple pattern (not too good at explaining this...LoL) on your stick fill and cap runs as in the last pic of your last roll posted, hope you can understand that....(what can I say, its the Irish in me... )

sean its no prob, i just wasn,t sure if you meant tig or stick, iv,e a lot of irish in me. the first pic here shows the piece of hi tech kit i use for rotating the pipe. i will find that pic for you, i sort of get lost if i go off track, my pic library is a mess, f/j
