Scraping lessons

I’m potentially teaming up with a ex devlieg scraper and machine tool builder to teach scraping and machine tool rebuilding.
Ex devlieg men along with sip are the most respected and skilled of scraper hands.
I specialised in grinders though have done a equal amount of bed mills etc but am rough compared to the above gentleman

I was wondering what interest there would be. A planer , mill and surface grinder would be on site

I think at the moment it is a bit of a black art, there is probably demand for different levels of instruction. I would not have need or patience for advanced tuition but would like to know the basics of scraping to improve the operation of old kit rather than restore to better than new.

Few years ago I saw a father and son team scrape in a very large granite surface table in an aerospace factory

Table was in a controlled environment and about 3x4 m in size

They were there for three days just working on one table

I think spending time with him is a rare opportunity, these men are premier league and there’s not many left.
I’ve seen him first hand bring in a devlieg on site back to jig borer tolerance with basic tools and equipment.
I ain’t too bad either...

do you have a source for cast iron blocks to practice on?

I’ve got a box square and angle plate i could scrape but would need grinding first.

I thought this was going to be about engine bearing scraping ,my dad taught me ( he worked in supermarine ww2) but this I guess is similar but on a much larger scale ? interesting to just understand the process

Yes please. I think the only other option of recent times has been the occasional classes by Richard King, when he does his European tours.

Even before the scraping class with the master, maybe an introductory one day on measuring the wear on various types of machines.

E.g. flat-way lathes like Myford; V-way lathes; box-way mills like Beavers, dovetail-way machines. Discuss when the wear is too much to scrape; discuss machining options prior to scraping; discuss "putting-on" options (new gibs, Turcite. Moglice, etc.). A crib sheet of online resources and printed books would also be good as back up material.

I’m going to work out a syllabus then costs.
This thread will allow people to suggest what they would like to learn
Then need to find out how many days people would like.
Also I need to work out class size to cost to how many power scrapers I need
Naturally needs to be cheaper than you know who.

Hopefully I will know very shortly if coburn and myself come to a agreement re me manufacturing their power scrapers.
If so I ll be able to supply a good amount without going skint!

I may be interested. I did scraping when I did my apprenticeship and a couple of years after. That was 30 years ago...

I could bring my 'state of the art' powered scraper which I acquired a few years ago, but haven't used yet....

Naturally needs to be cheaper than you know who.

You could run them at half the cost and still make a tidy profit.
