Hoist

This came up in a discussion with my dad, he remembers a bloke moons ago about 50 years ago lifting a 3ton boat with one of these hoists.

Do they still exist, if not why?
Or are they dangerous like monkey winches?

Suppose the links in the chain can be supported better than standard chain
Would be interesting to see inside it.
My little hoist is good for 3t

If it's older perhaps the margins are less as well?

It's the doubling up inside the snatch blocks that gives the higher lifting ratio. I have an old Yale single chain that ben very useful over the years.

Remember that they are puny Yankee tons of 2000lbs, not good solid British ones of 2240lbs (your hoist is rated in metric tonnes of 1000kg or 2204lbs).

Come alongs are the same thing but use a chain. Still used.

Yeah we have plenty of come alongs on the ship, much more useable than chain blocks as they can easily be used in any plane/angle, chain blocks tend too bind up if they are anything but straight up and down. Come alongs are particularly useful too get things lined up in position, like pipe flanges.

I know of all the alternatives have plenty of winching options. This was a question of curiosity why didn't this motorcycle chain type winch stay around?

Yale pull lifts have that type of chain. Somewhere abouts I have a very old single drop 1 ton X 10 feet one

Just over a year ago I purchased a new single drop 1500kg X 3 metre pull-lift for only £35.00 from eBay

It may be because the chains looked weak.

I have one with a motorcycle type chain and it has to be dead flat to work, no wriggle room unlike a chain hoist, of for a straight lift, not so good trying to pull a car straight,

I've got a couple of the single run ones, so I guess not really the same thing... inherited them from my father

I've always known them as a "silvester" (like the guy from the rokey films)

Seen them on ships but never here in the UK. Did have a single run of chain one with really wide chain.

As an aside, suprised to find someone else who knows what a Monkey Winch is!
