Welding it up took no time at all but cutting the block with a 9" angle grinder was another story. I can normally cut pretty square with an angle grinder but this time . . .

Should have used a hack saw, would have helped to tone at least one arm.

My wife enjoys canicross and the other day the dog pulled so hard it broke the ring open on it's harness. My wife asked if I could fix it for her. As I hadn't picked up the scratch start tig in 18 months (or any welder for that matter) I figured it was good excuse to get it out again. I wasn't convinced how well it would go welding the ring as it is made from 3mm bar so I made an extra 1 from 5mm in the hope that 1 of them would be useable. I tried the 5mm one first, but had the shade on the helmet too dark so couldn't see what I was doing. Due to that I kept the ark going too long and the weld puddle sagged into the ring.

I then tried the 3mm one, turning the shade level down, but also reduced the amps from my usual 10 amps per mm down to just over 20 amps total, figuring that it taking longer to form the puddle would offer more control in this situation. I'm quite pleased with how it came out, especially as it was welded in and on my bench vice whilst standing.

Not really something I've made but something I've done, new wheel bearing which involved stripping the front suspension after much battering on steel parts inserted in an aluminium upright, best bit is its only a year since it was last in bits and everything was greased.

A pivot pin for a drain cock rod on a steam locomotive, the nut sheared off the end of the old pin so i volunteered to make a new one, first proper turning job on my boxford and i think it came out pretty good for a learner.... having a working lathe i can actually turn stuff on is great, next will be some pins for the landrover doors...

As I managed to score some Argon on Friday this was on the cards for a the son of a friend who sadly died age 55 from Motor Neurone in 2017, like his father he enjoys alfresco cooking and I made a similar beer can chicken holder for myself a while back. Tony was Sicilian, back in the 80's I nicknamed him Tone the Bone which stuck and I would leave cardboard cutout bones hidden in places where sometimes it would be years before he found them. I posted him Bonio's, left mini Bonio's in his car, pockets, toolboxes and anywhere I could much to the amusement of his children. I left a small brass bone on his headstone when I first visited hence the bone theme on the beer can chicken stand. Nothing bought and all made from offcuts and scrap.

B7, I think they've used a similar idea for years and Passat's are the same. If only everything came apart as easily as it goes back together when its all cleaned and greased

Ha, yes! I've currently got my b5 in bits to replace a wheel speed sensor. Getting it apart was a nightmare.

Well, no-one's tried to guess and I won't be able to reveal until tomorrow evening so here it is - a miniature co2 canister to schrader valve adapter for emergency tyre inflation. I know you can buy them for a tenner in Halfords but not small enough to fit in my onboard puncture kit. There's a screw-in spike inside to pierce the canister. Gotta watch you don't get cold burns using these things.

My first though was that it would be bike related, and my second thought was that it reminded me of a tyre valve cap. It briefly crossed my mind that it was a valve extender, but I’d never have guessed what it actually was.

Didn’t even know such a thing exit to be honest!

Thanks, I'd like to claim credit for the idea but the BMW comes with a puncture kit fitted in the undertray (a Rema Tip Top tubeless kit), and it has an adapter but I forgot to put it all away properly one time and the adapter ended up in my motorbike jacket pocket. I emptied the pockets to put it all in the wash and the dog somehow got hold of the adapter and chewed both ends off!
