Chisel morticer recommendations?

I'm thinking about buying a chisel morticer. I'm thinking it will be like the table saw in that I can buy a beautiful old one for about the same price as a less nice one. Needs to be 240V.

Anyone have any ideas on what to look for or what to be careful about? Or anyone got a spare one?

I've got a couple of Multico. I bought one that needed a bit of cleaning up but ended up buying another one that I could use immediately. I used it to make some oak window frames and it made life so much easier.

I was planning to get rid of the other one.

Wadkin, Modern, Sedgwick, Multico - all good machines. Mine is badged Modern (which was a machinery company in Nottingham I think) and they got all their castings from Wadkin as far as I can see. Not much to go wrong with them, mostly the chisels bend or break if they are abused rather than the machine itself getting damaged. If you can get one with a selection of chisels you’ll save some money - they’re pricey and the Chinese ones are usually a bit rubbish. I’ve only ever used three chisels, ¼, ⅜, and ½”.

I boughtt a Charnwood W316 just because it was cheap and advertised locally. I was having to make some gates and thought it would be easier than using mortice chisels as I usually do. It makes life so much easier and it's very quiet. having xy adjustment means you can adjust the size of mortices if you want them slightly wider thatn the chisel you're using. it's a bit of a hernia threat as it's so heavy, surprising for a budget machine. It depend what use you're needing it for.

I had a multico, good quality machines. Dont whatever you do buy a Record Irwin one, we had one at school, they are truly awful!

Do you have a drill press ?

If so, I have an American made attachment kit with a fence that I have never used, which might be suitable ?
