Clarke 160TE

Ok, just tried to buy a Clarke 160TE and I've just been told two things:

1/ that I need to hardwire this into a 30amp cooker socket and not run via a 3 pin plug.

2/ you cannot swap the std regulator for a small bottle regulator (I need to do this just so I can play with it straight away).

Can anyone confirm if this is true or not?

Hi Michael,
As far as i know you can plug it into a 3 pin plug but you might not get full power without it blowing,but should be ok on lower settings,and the big regulator is factory fitted im afraid and you cant fit a small one without major dismantling of the machine.

Mmm, interesting. I have a 160TE that is in the process of being delivered (might turn up today)... I asked for a regulator etc so that I could use it with small bottles while I learn a bit what I am doing. I hope that I am not going to be in for a struggle with getting it fitted! I guess I will see when I get it!

All nonsense!
They will run from a standard 13amp plug & you can run them from disposables with the addition of a canister regulator.
How many you want?

I got it from Mr Weldequip! So, I was expecting it all to be fine!! As per his previous post it looks like I was right! I will let you know how I get along with it when it turns up.... I might even write a small article about a complete newbie's first experiences with it!

can you pm me a price for the 160TE, a 13amp plug and a regulator to convert to small bottles........ and if you sell small bottles, 3 or 4 argon/co2.

I can then convert it back to the full regulator once i get a BOC bottle.

Actually Mr Equip, while you're at it is there any chance of a price for the 150TE
(this is the top of their range 'normal' mig isn't it?).

After using some of the mig machines in the welding course I'm doing I've
realised that the (very) old BOC badged machine I've got is a POS.

I've just bought one from weldequip and it should be delivered tomorrow - the helmet and other stuff came today which was good. Walking round all day scaring people wearing the mask but that's another story!

Off to sort out some gas tomorrow.

Very kind of you Mike, thanks Main thing about us small, specialist dealers is that we know the equipment we are selling. I've personally played with all the machines I stock, had them in bits, serviced & repaired them + have all the spare parts for them in stock. Another rarity these days, but we are just about hanging on in there!

Walking round all day scaring people wearing the mask but that's another story!

I do recall coming on leave on the overnight ferry from Oostende to Dover many years ago, had far too many 'nightcaps' and walked (staggered) off the ship and into Customs wearing mine. Had a nice sleep on the train to London though

Well I have taken the plunge and bought the Clarke 160TE, small reg, a few bottles of co2/Argon and a auto dimming mask.

Once I've procured a full size bottle from BOC I'll convert it back to full size reg.

Now to find a local sheet metal supplier so I can practise!!

I'll post some pics up over the weekend....................

ive been welding since i was 13!!!!
, got myself a nice cheapy clarke 85 jobby lasted me til now 16 still going strong, however i feel its time to step the power up a tad. weldequip could you PM me about prices on a clarke 151te and 160 and the small gas bottle regulator for the 160 plz also a how much for a few argon/co2 bottles thanks

There's not much difference in price between the two models, apart from the fact the 151TE is ready to use straight from the box on disposable canisters, and the 160TE requires the addition of a refillable cylinder.
If you (or any other prospective buyers) has a fair amount of work to do, I would forget the disposable canisters & go for the larger, refillable option. The disposables don't last two minutes & are around a tenner a throw... you can hire a refillable argoshield cylinder for about a quid a week & they contain about 40X the amount of gas compared to a throw-away canister!
