gorilla glue?

ive used the foaming /expanding gorilla glue and found it okay on some stuff

is that type of glue unique to the gorilla brand , or can it be found elsewhere for cheaper , if so whats it called?

This is one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions.

I was forced to buy a home brand washing up liquid the other day, there was no Fairy liquid (first world problems eh...). It's the "same thing"; a green soapy liquid in "the same" squeezy bottle. It is of course entirely different. A similar situation more closely related perhaps is "superglue" or CCA's, they're "all the same" right? Wrong! Not by a LONG way.

Google will tell you the product category and chemical composition. You might even find a recipe but nothing will be "the same" as Gorilla Glue and the money you might save using a similar product might end up costing you in the long run.

People remember the quality of a product or service long after they've forgotten the price.

Its Polyurethane glue. It was about for yrs before Gorilla, stuck it in a bottle and charged 5x for it.

First bottle I bought (90’s) cost me about 40quid for a litre. I think it lasted about 3days before it was rock hard

Generally, PU glue does go off as it reacts with the moisture in the air. That is the one advantage of Gorilla glue in that you can buy in small bottles.

Maybe if you seal the tube very well (remove nozzle, clingfilm layers over opening, screw nozzle back on), you might have better luck. If you are very serious, perhaps place in a sealed container with silica gel and see how it gets on after three months.

@Agroshield beat me to it but my 2d worth -
PU glue go off by absorbing water and will go off in the tube if it isn't sealed properly. (It's very similar to the PU foam in the cans)
When it comes from the factory most are packed with dry nitrogen in the container to keep the damp air out.

Once it's open it starts to go off.
After I use it, I always store it upside down and it does help extend the shelf life.

Rutlands do a good version of it.

I use the 30 minute PU woodglue in gunnable tubes, similar to the Toolstation one ^. As long as you make sure you cap it properly, preferably with a screw on nozzle cap it lasts well enough. I've never noted the exact time, but certainly months.

no it keeps for a good few months you might have to unblock the nozzle or use a new one

^^ this ^^^ helps a lot for intermittent wood worriers like me.

One thing I have notice with the tubes is the nozzle sometimes splits. The glue expands as it cures and can split the nozzle where it screws onto the tube. I've not yet needed to replace the nozzle because the glue has set it it.

As others have said its polyurethane, branded glues are well regulated and pretty consistent

If its for wood other than engrain joints pva is far better

First one Balcotan came out about 25 years ago, It was rebranded as Semparoc a few years ago, plenty of other manufacturers.
Gorrilla glue was a rebranding exercise to sell the same stuff for more money.
None of them have any UV resistance, put them in the sun & they will fail in no time. Likewise on boats dont use them for anything structural as they will fail before long.

No surprise to discover the various manufacturers are making somewhat spurious claims. A bit more digging and you could probably find a YouTube channel testing them under pseudo-scientific conditions. If there's enough of those sorts of channels, would be interesting to compare the results against a list of their sponsors...

The truth is out there (among all the lies).

I just buy large egger joist and floor glue, I've built all sorts with it inside and out, nothing has fallen apart yet.

That's the key. Keep the tube on after use and use a new tube.
