I think the problem with the stuff is they are happy to sell everything.
This is probably exactly the same engine stand that is made and sold to a big name manufacturer who puts there own name on it.
They get charged a price which includes quality control and they start a guy welding and all the ones he makes first day on the job probably fail the quality control but as the factory is not selling anything with its own name on they are happy to sell all the failed ones on.
I presume it's been sold as unbranded via Ebay or the like from a bulk vendor of the same sort of stuff

Clean up the joints & weld it up properly

I ordered something similar from Machine Mart, good quality, warranty, easy enough to return in the event of an issue. How cheap do you really need to go?

Mine has had a 350 Chevy hanging off it for the last year with no dramas.

This looks the same as the one I bought and as far as I knew most Clarke stuff is also from China isn’t it?

I’d imagine there is a certain amount of quality inspection done if it is sold direct through a known U.K. outlet. There was certainly nothing wrong with the welding on this one.

I wander if they ‘grade’ them and then decide what market they go to.

That would make sense
I did wonder if it was like my old school days the welding guys got the virus so they’ve brought the PE teacher in to take over.
Gonna strip it tomorrow and reweld the frame
Last thing I want is it to go back and get sold on to some other poor soul who knows no better

I bought a cheapie hydraulic pipe bender off eBay, £79, and it’s pretty hefty unit with 6 formers etc, and can actually bend bits of metal okay, at times, sort of..

Looking into the paper trail I found the original manufacturer, who will sell these benders at GB£4 each. (Four pounds) if I ordered 100 pieces. How on earth can they produce such an item, and sell it at any sort of profit, at that price?


That doesn’t include shipping or packaging, just the basic 100 items for collection at source.

True, and a lot of what we think is Chinese is actually from India which is the new China. The Chinese seemed to have upped their game in recent years.

Hmm. 450kg SWL or whatever, probably just a number someone in marketing dreamt up up on a lot of modern stuff.

Here's my Churchill engine stand -only good for 410kg apparently.

Whereas my Chinesium engine stand is much stronger as it's apparently good for 450kg.

however when I had a Jag XK motor that needed some work it went in the Churchill stand; loading it I released the weight from the workshop crane and onto the stand and it didn't droop at all.

Cleaned off the paint and it was worse than 1st though
But I’ve rewelded and painted it now so should be fit for purpose

As AVE says, the secret of nice looking welds is thick paint.
