Landrover Reliability

Had to change an alternator on a 2010 Range Rover last year, body had to be lifted off the chassis to do this.

No offence but if it was a proper Range Rover then there's no chassis to lift the body off... It being a monocoque and all! Sport yes, has a chassis, but not the Vogue.

And I've done an alternator swap on a Range Rover (slightly older but a TDV8 and you don't need to drop the engine out, it is easier to though).

That's unusual, in my experience with Land Rovers & Range Rovers its usually all the British made parts that fail regularly
( if they don't fail they just rust away to nothing )

there was no way of cheating - every LR specialist I called confirmed it was the only way , and body off chassis required for some engine changes etc.
cant remember where the alternator was made

Not sure that’s true ,I did one a couple of years ago without taking the body off! Absolute pig of a job but possible, think that was on a 2010 plate ? I know some “specialists “ say it’s a body off job to replace metal brake pipes but again it’s possible.

I worked mine hard to the amazement of many people, looked after they go on forever. It was costing me too much in diesel or it would have stayed. Genuinely a bit sad to see it drive away. Its Japanese replacement is just a truck, when I'm done with it I will get rid and buy something else

Must reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned was a series 2a 1965 lwb Land Rover. Ok I rebuilt it into a reliable motor.

Most unreliable vehicle that caused a lot of misery was a 4.2 diesel land cruiser.
Broke down In the French country side in deep winter, no phone signal and a two week old baby.
One of the dearest cars I’ve owned and pos TIL the day I sold it to a exporter.

By urban legend this story should have been the other way around!!

Ive said it before and ill say it again most of land rover unreliability problems is down too unsympathetic operators/poor maintenance and bad maintenance regimes. Having said that my series 3 swb seemed to have a mind of its own and seemed too break down to the point of leaving you completely stranded and having to call the aa on pourpose when ever my dad who hates it would drive it. Maybe it had a sixth sense and it gose right ill show you, my mum says i should start calling it christine.

Im not saying stuff didnt go wrong it did, but never badly enough to leave me stranded and it could sit for 3 to 4 months at a time and you could walk out turn the key give her a little throttle and she would speing back to life. As a sort of existential protest i belive the starter motor gave out the morning i took it up too my rented council garage too start restoring it (i understand why now its been nearly 3 years and i have made little progress mainly due to motivationon my part im sorry too say i need to get on with it), couple thumps with a hammer sorted that.

Not including my new dmax as i havent had it long enough it is by far the most reliable car i have owned bar a 1997 nissan micra.

Land Rover have been using Denso starters for almost 25 years and those contacts fail on Discos,Freelanders etc. It is a common issue on those starters not just on Land Rovers, Denso alternators are also a fairly common failure especially on Disco3/RRS so to say it is unusual is just not true. People have been changing the contacts in those starters for 20 years.

At least on a Defender everything is reasonably accessible. My TD5 has proved to be a pretty good engine.

It would do ,its German .
And don’t forget,the jap part may be the best there is.....in the engine the japs designed it for,could be the Germans specified a starter for a smaller/easier engine.

The TD5 is not German, the TD4 is a BMW derived unit the TD5 is not even though the naming the format is the same.

Td5 was the last rover designed engine, it was used because its british and therefore better than what the germans had

You can always combine a bit of Japcrap with a Landrover

My Landrover experience is not too bad, though I have not had a newer one: I bought a 3 year old Disco 2 TD5 -ran for over a year, zero faults, I looked after my dad's Freelander TD4 for 5 years, bar servicing only annoying failure was an electric window cable, then the Defender TD5 that I have had for 16 years now: bar failures from offroad abuse and launching boats in the sea it has been pretty good and all repairs can be done by me at home. A new turbo at about 80k miles and a leaking fuel pressure regulator were the only engine issues.

Regular servicing and using decent quality parts and running a Landy is not bad, it may never compete with the Saab's I had from the 80's and 90's for reliability or hopefully our current Lexus RX.

In my youth had more trouble free miles on my 50's Triumph than I did on my 78 Honda CB550 !
