Computer for editing and storing videos

Morning. I've started making youtube videos for a bit fun, idea being just to record the projects I'm doing and then some driving videos of the places we visit in the classics. I'm currently using a 32gb ipad and it's fine for editing but just hasn't got the storage capacity and saving to gopro cloud is just too slow. Couple of questions; can you get external hard drives for ipads these days or would I be better off with a laptop and external hard drive?

Quik. Making the videos and editing is no problem. Is the transferring and storing them is useless with my ipad and the gopro cloud is useless as well. A decent hard drive is needed.

for back up and edits always use a pc with an external hard drive

but also remember that external hard drive can also go faulty as well

this includes usb hard drive enclosures if your computer software fails to read the hard drive you have problems

you can also buy usb or firewire caddys and use a hard drive instead

the advantage with these is any hard drive can be used laptop or normal hard drive also brings the price down

one other thing you seen me use usb sticks with the laptop the usb 3.0 are the fastest and can transfer well

you can split what you save into these rather well and carry them much easier

as you noticed i could watch films right from the usb stick

use a usb stick operating system and transfer files onto another usb stick to back up

Ok, I had the same issue. The work IT folk created me a private youtube channel for work related stuff

You can edit video on pretty much any device, but it can be a miserable experience on lower end hardware.

I'd probably start with deciding what piece of software you prefer / want to use and then look at its requirements.

I can't help with suggestion of external devices on ipads - I don't think it's possible, but I'm not an ipad expert

As Gaz1 said you need any digital stored records in two places or you don't have it as sods law it will get corrupted and you've lost it.

You can get various adaptors to connect external storage connected to an iPad using lightning or the current USB Type C connectors. The Old 30pin isn't so easy. There are a few apps for the older IOS's to access external storage too.
For the editing you will need to have the files on the iPad then when finished store them on the external storage. Again duplicate this to avoid losing it. If you have another computer then use a Dropbox account or similar and keep the second copy there.

For the type of storage I would suggest solid state rather than mechanical so USB pens or SSD drives as the mechanical would need a power supply too.

Ive just bought two 1TB memory sticks from ebay, £10 each

Only had them a few days but so far so good

I don’t know enough about IT, a memory stick is a memory stick

just incase you dont know search for your pc memory as there is better speed stats and reliability from when they was first released

makes your pc faster without overclocking it

I have an iPad, as far as I know usb sticks are no use.

After over 30 years in IT, including running the department for a publishing house I will give you my objective opinion of this from experience.
If you're an Apple guy then a Macbook Pro is the way to go. Made for the job. Just don't expect it to play nicely with anything corporate if you need that. Printing can be a PITA as well depending on the model of printer.
If you prefer a PC then a good fast one with SSD will be fine, plus it is compatible with almost everything. Linux vs Windows depends on personal taste and available software packages.
Chromebooks are a complete waste of time outside of education. Adobe claim to be making a version of Creator Suite for it but the devices are normally very limited in storage capacity. Many are just 32GB for hard disk. Woefully inadequate.
IPADs are a joke. OK for a bit of web browsing but beyond that if you try to use them in anger you will become just that, angry. I have a IPAD Pro (paving slab size) which I have tried to use in a real manner, i.e. to replace a PC and it just fails at every hurdle. Faceache, forums etc are OK but that makes it the most expensive web browser on the planet.
USB storage should be treated as completely temporary. Fine for copying stuff around, not reliable as a backup medium. They are also easily lost or physically damaged.
Backup for files and data, use a Cloud backup service. Crashplan, Google Drive, Onedrive etc. The wise man will encrypt all data before it leaves the device. I know for a fact that Google especially are prone to data mining on G-Drive but they can't do this on encrypted stuff. Programs like Cryptomator will do the necessary.

Take with a pinch of salt as you prefer. Just my opinion having used most things.

Thanks guys. Bought a lightning to usb adaptor and USB flash drive. Hope it all works. I’ll look at using Apple cloud to back stuff up and use the USB drives for additional storage so I can reduce the amount stored in my iPad. I find making the moves on my iPad with Quik really good and for what I’m currently doing.
