Sub in a remote location, thieves looking for copper ripped the fences off the transformer pens, unbolted the lids then set the cooling oil on fire trying to get them to trip so they could disconnect them. One of the thieves was badly burnt when 11KV jumped and got him. He lasted a couple of days.

so not all bad news then surprised the fire brigade didn't put it out before checking power was off . I was at a place and the 11kv transformer was cooking and overheating they were going to cool it down with water till politely told and the leccy board shut it down they brought the big mobile generator wagon down plugged in and had a temp supply till it was renewed with a bigger one

One of the chaps I was talking to that works for UKPN got a callout for a fault at the height of all that scrap metal madness a few years ago - some delightful had broken into a substation and tried to cut out some of the copper with a hacksaw.
The genius had expired along with most of his arm, presumed his mates left him and legged it as he was unlikely to be doing it alone.

This chap was first on site and said it was rough and the smell stays with him. I felt sorry for him, not what you want to come across in any job. I didn't feel so sorry for the pikey - natural selection at work.
