It's a while I'm thinking about
Could be a not hardened steel hammer useful for something?

Generally, I find hammers are useful for everything.

If striking something that is hardened it wouldn’t shatter/splinter? Can’t think of anything else!

Yes I have been intending to make a couple more. The little brass one doesnt have enough weight. One will be a hollow dead blow hammer filled with steel BBs.

Definitely useful, a non-hardened surface does not marr other surfaces. Especially if it's made from say bronze, copper or lead. Or plastic.

I have a steel drift, it's made from mild steel and hollow, I filled the hollow with lead shot. I'll eventually TIG braze one face to build up a coppper face on one side. It's very useful for every day stuff.

there is other soft hammers and you find them

rubber and plastic hammers

Thor make a good range, Copper and hide are a good general purpose ones, hard plastic faces are also good for assembly work where you don’t want to damage parts/edges.

I’ve also got a lead shot filled one (dead blow) which helps prevent it bouncing off the face when you hit something.

The old 'copper bopper' comes to mind.

I want to make a little soft hammer for positioning things on the lathe / mill perhaps steel one face and brass the other, something to do next week when the weather is not so nice.

there is one older and easy to make thats softer than copper

One of my favoured hammers/mallets is this these days. Pretty much non marking, only gets used on stainless.
Next favourite is a no3 copper mallet for when the nylon has just too much give.
Then a 2lb club hammer, always used with a homemade drift for precision when dressing weld seams or tacks.

yet but the one thing with a lead hamer when it gets out of shape a rasp will bring it back really quickly with a little heat and its back to smooth again

and if so deformed it can be made up again and again and so forth

thats the one good thing about a lead hammer

A dead blow hammer is not about having the densest material, it’s so the shot keeps travelling forward after the face strikes, preventing bounce off the object.

True, dont have any lead, do have some dead carbide inserts I could crush up.
I do want it to be small denser the better

My idea was to use a normal hammer and anneal it (so essentially ruin the temper )
Also a reduced (1"-½"-1") brass Tee fitting , two brass caps , and an ½" black pipe as handle
Than filled with sand or lead , put a cap for the handle

you can get bronze hammers as they are non sparking which may be critical in an explosive environment......in old days horses working in gunpowder factories had bronze horseshoes so they didn't spark
