Straightening Angle Iron

Hi All,

Anybody got tips or tricks on how to straighten 25mm angle iron 3mm thick.

I dont have a torch so tools available are:

Arc welder
Vice
Lump Hammers and Sledge

PS: we are in lockdown so not possible to just buy some more.

Leverage is your best bet here. Do you have any tube? Pinch the bar in the vice close to the bend, then try and lever the other end with the tube slipped over. That’d be my way anyway.

Put in the vice and give it a pull.
It will bend easily.
If it need to be perfectly straight that's a whole different matter.

use vice and pull to get it straight

dont forget to strighten on both angles at one point so pull stright reposition and use vice to straighten the metal as you go

its the same reference with flat bar go slow and steady and you will get it straight

Thanks for tips. Will give it a try. It doesn't need to be perfectly straight.

Sometimes I use blocks in my vice to iron out kinks, you get a bit more power from this than using just the jaws in the vice. The view is looking down on the vice jaws.

I'll raise you to clamp, cut, clamp, weld.

I straightened some with a lump hammer on a concrete floor and got it looking OK ...then with some big clamps on to a length of beefy box and more gentle walloping got it near enough ....

Worked a treat for some kinks in the bar. Used a monkey wrench and bar/lever to get some twists out also.

Funny how we get resourceful when no other options available.

Quite so. From my ‘roundtuit’ pile, today’s efforts - a sack trolley found in a skip without wheels, now has wheels. Do I need it? No.
