Budget is tight as no idea what is happening for a good while.
I never realised but i cant bear the look of white placcy fascia boards, I twigged just now that they bug me and are omnipresent in South Wales.
Use wood and replace in a few years? mine must be millions of years old.
I will not have a speck of gloss paint on my house.

I know how to fit it, (ha ha ha) oh how I expect to laugh when I expose the ends of my joists; every job on this house has been a scream. Especially as I have never done any of DIY before.
Last thought; do the gutters run flat or have a light slope to the drain point?
I even know what a Sofit is now. I'd probably fir them and use vents.

It's normal to run with a slight fall towards the downpipe. But whether that's really necessary I couldn't say. The water is definitely not going to sit in the gutter, arms folded and refusing to move, if there is no fall

Il always aim to have a slight fall just to keep the detrius moving. Not so it's visible.

Should be easy once their is something rigid to fix gutters to. At the moment its a spiders web of manky wires, wooden chocks and 'stuff' holding them up. I'll try and get photos.
Hell, it looks as though I am personally benefiting from this awful situation. I need to keep busy or I'll go mad, I've been here five years and ignored all of this.
I am finally getting my cycling legs back again after a lazy few years, I have to keep in shape or my knackered lungs would not like this terrible 'Thing' going around

Likewise. Plugging through piles of junk and sorting out some order. And spending time with my kids is really nice. I'm normally flat out working everyday

Work is quiet, weather is nice, no paragliding so crack on with my old house.
Kitchen is almost finished.
but time for some outdoor work, I have dug out and filled cracks in the render under a million coats of paint, next I think is replace the guttering. Old cast iron wonky jobbies.
The fascia boards are a bit of a mix, some crumbly and some seem sound. So Plan A is replace them first.
What would anybody reccomend to use? I am thinking tanalised wood but not sure of the dimensions.
I'm not taking them down until I have sourced materials; but B+Q are local and are doing click and collect. So a good chance I will be able to get sorted.
So what material? thickness and width?
The old ones have the remains of about a hundred coats of gloss (old owner was a Paint Nazi, glossed everything that did not move) do I paint or leave them natural?
What do I fix them too? knowing this house it will be another comedy story, do I set the gutters level or slightly sloping towards the drain? the main wall is about 6m long and at the moment there is one down pipe near the middle straight above a drain.

Jewsons are a good bet to try ..they might also deliver to you . Their wood stocks are second to none and are used by the building trade .. B&Q might be cheaper but I bet you'll have to buy two or three time to last as long as the Jewson stuff

Have a look online for them , locally we also have the old LBS builders merchants near Touts garage on the Glannam road . They too have a great selection of decent lengths of builders timbers ( 6 mtrs or so) & also sell wood preservatives

Our neighbours house where we used to live had to have side fitting new timbers screwed on the roof trusses as the original wood the boards were fitted to had rotted away in just over 14 years.

The guys then screwed on new pieces of 40 mm thick wood on to the side wood inline with the trusses , cut to squares IIRC . They used a laser sight to get every thing accurate including a very accurate fall . . Putting up a full scaffold rather then mess about on a ladder . It also allowed them to replace a half width of the bottom row of felt it to make sure the rain water runs into the gutters as the outer edge was also rotted away .

We changed the old wooden facias that were wonky and badly joined to the extension with tantalised and the soffit was replaced with T&G OSB3 touching close to the building, This gave somewhere to fix the J trim onto and the venting is a must.

the reason why white is used is coloured plastic fades over the years so be aware of this when your going to buy plastic

brown guttering ive known it where the joints are a total different colour to the guttering even black guttering does the same

Jewsons is closed, except a few branches for emergency utility type stuff. Ive been trying to get materials, both my normal go to places where I have accounts are closed. Waiting to hear back from the other merchant in our local town.

Some places still supplying on line, but I need 8 dumpy bags in total, 4 pea gravel and 4 concrete, and they dont come by dpd or who ever

Having seen the damage squirrels do once they get in I would say 6mm armour steel mounted on insulators and wired to mains.

For the ease of fitting and maintenance free nature, I would'nt fit wood. Plastic looks fine. Like plastic, but not horrible and after a few weeks, it doesn't get a second look.

Definitely have a run on the gutters, the less you like cleaning them, the bigger the run. You can get cast-iron-esque plastic guttering if you think it's worth the extra. And gutter "hedgehogs" if you get a lot of leaves.

I use the cast iron look a like plastic guttering, costs a bit more, but looks ok on an old house. Has a matt stippled finish.

The Brett Martin stuff. Shop about, as it adds up. I ended up buying brackets from one place, guttering another, same brand, delivered direct from maker, but brackets we 3 quid a piece cheaper.

Softwood bargeboard ~10yrs old. South facing.

Probably hasn't been painted as often as it ought to have been but it's not the fault of the paint.

all because owners didnt do proper service to the outside of the property

the splits in the wood also tell me sooner or later they will need replacing and expect to do some of your rafters at the edges as well

I'm not complaining, they aren't mine! Just up looking at them now and figured I'd post for interest. Why I wouldn't want to fit wood - particularly softwood ones on mine.

These will probably get plastic capping or maybe just these south gable ends replaced as the rest are pretty tidy.
