French gas bottles

Nope, no confusion. It has a small injector and needs high pressure to get the flow. My torch has a max inlet pressure of 4bar. I’m using an adjustable reg that goes up to 6bar(max you can get from propane as that’s what the cylinder pressure is).

Ovens/gas hobs that sort of thing just let the gas out and it burns with the oxygen in the ambient air.

Forges / big flame devices / blow torches use a smaller nozzle and much higher pressure to up the speed of the gas and use a venturi to draw in the extra air they need.

Buy the bottle from somewhere like this

Then you refill them at the garage from the lpg pump.
Lot more common in Europe so might be cheaper to buy one over there. Not sure if campsites etc. sell them abroad?

Actually gas ovens and hobs work that way too. I’m guessing the reason for small injectors and higher pressures in portable stuff is to keep hose sizes down and to reduce the risk of light back. Maybe to do with flame speed or quench gap etc. Also portable appliances aren’t limited by the supply pressures in fixed supplies.

You dont need 2.
The best thing about them is that you can top them up and you only pay for the gas you put in so it does not matter if you refill a half full one!

They just have pipes coming from the taps to a outlet nozzle (like a stubby mig tip) and that's directly under a diffuser plate.
My forge has a nozzle way back down a pipe and the venturi is a 1.5" pipe about 8" long. That runs at 4bar.

The cooker burners will be pulling air in below the diffuser plate

Always good to have a spare, we generally run out on a sunday, or Christmas day @hotponyshoes .

When I started out I had one refillable and one normal full price one from the garage.
When the refillable ran out I put the normal bottle on then swapped them back over as soon as I had refilled it!
I have 3 of them now (plus a 60l in the van)

Funnily enough I think they come with the French style male bottle thread on.
Plenty of various adaptors available, on the 19kg ones I have fitted the adaptors so I can just screw any normal propane reg on. (So I can use them in my cooker, patio heater, blowtorch whatever)

The big one in the van I fitted an adjustable (0-4bar) french style regulator directly to the bottle and hose from that.

I have fitted a few into campers/horseboxes and I fit an outlet adaptor to copper pipe compression fitting then run the hard line to a manifold for multiple take-offs.

You can adapt to pretty much anything you want really.

After typing the last post I remembered I have a very nice 0-6bar french regulator in the shed.
But when looking for that I also found one of the adaptors (i think) you need.
Would you like one of these?

That’s very much appreciated but as yet we haven’t settled on a burner for them so still unsure of what will be needed. I need to get some info together for them so they can decide what to do. Cheers

What was the point of, you-know-what, then?

Why standardise something useful when you could concentrate on ensuring all the cucumbers don't have a bend in them or all that apples are a constant diameter.

Honestly, buy it in france, then if it goes wrong you don't have to take it back to blighty, instead of changing regulators etc...

I’m not going. If I was I’d give it a go. They don’t speak french and always have problems getting what they want. I’ve been amazed by what’s apparently not available in France!
