hi mate im making a hasp for my shed so I can fit a decent lock I got a piece of bar so i thought make one of those it will be damn strong with it been 10mm thick i thoughtWhat are you doing with the bar, is it structural? Are you welding it on the bench or in position somewhere?
If you are just knocking something simple and non critical I'd go with 2.5mm 6013, but do yourself a favour and get some scrap to practice on first!
cheers mate ill take your advice and do some practice beads to try and keep them str8Hi,

For general work I use the rods seen at the link above; cheap and cheerful and not at all bad. I've used them with my SIP Weldmate 140A and now use them with my Pickhill Bantam 180A welder. I've been arc welding for over 55 years and I'm getting lazy because I seldom bother changing amps settings; I think the welder is set at 100 amps but if you experiment you'll find what suits you.
Practice on lumps of scrap metal until you can run a decent bead and get a steady hand then the world is yours. Good luck and happy welding.
Kind regards, Colin.

Just one of my projects welded with cheap rods. All it takes is practice.
good idea that mate ill make oneHi,
Be careful not to get "arc eye" most novice welders suffer this at first to some degree; if the rod sticks you'll soon see stars if you pull your welding mask away before breaking the rod free.
Once you succeed with your new hasp and staple how about making a lock cover otherwise locks tend to suffer in our climate?
Kind regards, Colin.

I made two garden huts and made two of these lock covers for weather protection; they work a treat.

The lock covers were made from a single piece of softwood each cutting them out on the bandsaw then having removed the middle section the ends were glued using exterior wood glue and pinned; a cheap brass butt hinge is the mounting and not shown is the galvanized bent wire clip to hold the cover closed; after lots of terrible weather the locks are still fine. The wooden wedge was temporary. A cabin hook and eye hold the doors open. Note the galvanized cup head bolt this added to prevent the screws being removed.

Cabin hook and eyes.
what I can gather once you have established an arc you pull the rod off the piece your welding and run your bead also lean the rod slightly towards your selfgood idea that mate ill make one
you could make it out of 20mm bar. Pickey with a cordless angle grinder will make short work of them. As has been said. Watch all of the videos on here. They are invaluable. Then practice, practice, practice. And when you have done that, practice some more. Not sure if you will get the screwfix 6013's at this time. I know they are click and collect for trade but I don't know about anyone elsehi mate im making a hasp for my shed so I can fit a decent lock I got a piece of bar so i thought make one of those it will be damn strong with it been 10mm thick i thought
yes mate as I looked on eBay as I didn't think could obtain from Screwfix under the circumstancesHi,
No problem obtaining the rods; there's plenty on eBay at fair prices with quick delivery.
Kind regards, Colin.
