A recenet post got me "pottering" after work in the play pen to calm down from many miles of driving, hard additional work.
I have a "Frozen Blubber Saw". I had cleaned it in the past to preserve it. I now have chosen to clean it up.
As it was, clean, covered in wax and dust.
The handle is held in place by some short chunky wood screws. But they came out easy with a bit of heat.
The handle was striped, sanded smooth and re-stained using wood dye, coffee and de-caff tea blend.
The teeth have been dressed and the whole lot waxed and oil.
The blade has some fantastic patterns in the steel , but the image does not show them well.
In my post, some one mentioned a Block saw. Now I have a Stone saw. But it was unloved and unused.
As It was received by me and left by me.
The plastic handle is un-comfortable, to small and feels rough.
So I made a new one. The pattern is as the original was. I then mess around with it. Until I get a design I like. but with in keeping as the original.
The clean up showed up a name.
The steel is good stuff.
There you can see a coating od wax and oil.
Handle fitted and tweaked to fit my hand.
You can see the silver soldering what holds the teeth in place.
Finished.
As I was in the swing, I got round to doing this iron.
The history this thing could tell.
The handle has been welded, bent, re-shaped and bent again.
There was a burr all round the base and the pits were full of something.
But 48 hours in a de-rusting bucket.
It was cleaned up.
Heated up, then using oil and wax it was sealed.

5 gallons of beer made this afternoon, in the airing cupboard for about 5 days & about 3 weeks to clear in the shed, so ready about the beginning of May ........ might be offline for a while then

I spent four days making the new tool post top plate for my Harrison lathe. 20mm thick. Tools used. Angle grinder. Hand crank union drill. And a combination of files. I wanted a clean finish that looks like it's been used.

Good point ....its only resting on top of the springs so it may look like it's not flatGreat job Spencer. But the more I look at it the more I think you need to spot face the nut seats so that they sit flush with the tops of the studs

Not today but over a couple of days , it was for a good friend of mine that passed away recently, his family asked everyone to not buy flowers but to make donations to st barnabas and Marie curie who helped to care and keep him comfortable in the last weeks of his life , I made this as i just felt i had to do something for him , first time I've done anything like this , we put it outside his workshop on the day of his funeral

I had pretty much resigned myself to there not being any point in starting to make the frame for the drawers I made back in post #9432 given the fact that the gauge on the argon bottle was reading only fractionally above empty, but I decided to have a punt anyway and just see how far I got before the gas ran out.
Incredibly, the gas didn't run out - the bottle just kept on giving!
Here's what it looks like at the moment:
It probably needs painting at some point, but I think I'll leave that until the weather gets a lot warmer. It also needs a bit of sheet material on the top so I can store stuff on top of it, but I couldn't be bothered to cut that out today, so that's a job for tomorrow. I'll probably attach it with some screws rather than welding it on, so I don't have to worry about gas for that job!
The drawers are (deliberately-ish) quite sloppy in the slots. I was feeling paranoid about them being too tight or about needing to add runners if they end up feeling horrible to open once the UHMW tape is in place so I erred on the side of too big. I think I went a bit far (the gap is about 15 mm wider than the drawers), so I might pad put some plastic or wooden spacers in the gap or something like that so they run straight back and forth. Then again I might not... who knows?!

In a rush of Madness I decided it was a "No Power tool day".
All my jobs in the play pen hand to de done by hand, no power tools.
The only power was for the radio and lights.
As I got it.
It was complete, but the wrong No 2 1/4 dies were the wrong type.
I had spares.
The item was stripped and wire brushed. Then using battery acid and a wire wool pad it was buffed up.
The dies them self's were wire brushed on the main faces. The "V cuts were cleaned using 600 grit Wet and Dry. In a wooden sanding block. Made for the job.
Warmed over Beatrix paraffin stove, wax and Danish oil was applied.
No2. Die sits nicely in the frame now.
Had to make a wooden frame to hold the vice to hold the Die holder, so I could de burr the running edges.
Hand cut, hand drilled and finished with French Polish.

I was nosey, I filled it full of water.
It did not leak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A bag of sand and oil and a bit off paraffin achieved this on the cap.
Not bad, I did go at it with Brasso later. Not much of a change.
Wire brush, Scotchbrite and Emery cloth got the body to this and exposed the good metal work and some old stencilling.
But the words were to far gone.
Unless some wise person can tell me a way to recover it.
It was sealed under a coat of varnish.
Got a few years under it's belt. So when theses appeared, who would be surprized?
Both shown there cleaned up, but not acid cleaned.
I didn't have any, so battery gel was used, washed off with hot water and washing soda. Water heated on a paraffin stove.
Using a Parafiin blow torch, copper bit @HughF that one we used. Lead solder was used. The flux and the iron got the holes filled a treat.
Brush painted.
To the man who supplied it. Yes I was tempted to paint it in a shade you may of choosen.
But that meant going out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, it being Saturday I decided it was time to fix one of my own guns. This is an interesting item, a 9mm Parabellum Lee Enfield. I know, quite unusual and they have an unusual bolt arrangement. All of the number 4's have removable bolt heads so they are ideal for this sort of conversion. The snag with this particular conversion is the cartridge balance spring (for want of a better term), it helps extract then eject the cartridge. Apparently there are no more so I decided to fix my own and then make some as a "product" if it worked out. The design is not the best, it has a very sharp bend right where the bolt head goes into the bolt itself. The last replacement lasted 15 or so rounds before it snapped.
The material is 24 SWG "spring steel" in it's annealed state. I was fortunate to get it but I have absolutely no idea what the hardening and tempering requirements are of this specific piece so a few educated guesses are in order. Bending it into the required shape is pure bench work. For the couple I am making a press set is just not realistic. Hammers and formers, little ones though:-)

Finally happy with the fit it was to Cherry Red and into my trusty tub of whatever it is, oily anyway:
Missus was cooking Lasagna tonight so I wrapped them in some tinfoil, racked it up to 220 Centigrade and left them there for a while, oven is cooling now so I will let you know if it worked tomorrow. If not it's back to the drawing board.
