parts washer ,are they any good

Thinking of getting a parts washer , you know small tub with shelf/pump that you can clean parts in, are they any good and id so whats the best (safe) solvent for degreasing car parts . thanks in advance ,size wise I would geuss couple feet long would be big enough

I use Jizer in mine... it did kill the pump although it took about 15 years of immersion to do it... and it's only a cheap pond pump anyway.

I have used red diesel leftover from jobs , and like brightspark says just a stiff paint brush.

I prefer diesel over parafin , but for the fact no matter how many showers change of clothes you always smell of diesel for days.., I do make sure I use a good dose of hand cream/barrier on my hands and wrists even though using gloves It still smells , hands do stay clean though!

I use derv and petrol mixed stiff brush and a spray bottle makes a little mess but it's free. And the mix lasts ages when it's too thick or dirty I use it to start the bon fire

I have the small draper one.
I use Jizzer in it, as I could get a decent supply.

Good for small ish parts. Also good to set up and leave running.

Bigger jobs.
Paraffin in a old bath I used in the past.
Or I have made up a container.
I use paraffin jizzer or TFR.

I will always wash the cleaner of with a pressure washer or hose pipe.

Or. If you have the kit.

Hot water heater, metal container, washing powder and leave.

thats interesting, never tried petrol/diesel mix and I can see the sence in disoping of it safely, I was given 5 gallons of diesel mixed with petrol that had been syphoned from a car tank by the garage, used it to start my bonfire all winter, next spring did the same and got flash back , I was seriously lucky although had to be checked in hospital , what had happened due to being left standing petrol had seperated to top , so I was stood in the vapours when I lit it. Possibly the luckiest day of my life getting away with it. Just so used to using straight diesel hadnt given it a thought about seperation and because of that the consequences could have been fatal. got away with slight burns but possibly the most terrifying thing being in that fireball was unbelievable

It would have been the vapours in the can.

Petrol and diesel will not seperate in the fluid in a can, even if you left them a million years.

...but the vapor layer above the fluid will always contain the most volitile elements of the mix.

I mix my veg oil with petrol to help winterrise itsonit dont gel. it don't seperate but yes the vapours hit you when u take the lid off.

interesting, so vapours on a warm spring day....my fault totally as I am so used to using a splash of diesel , petrol for strimmers etc in small plastic cans , diesel in 5 gal gerry can as was the "mix" I was given . certainly wont happen again !!!

I get vapours from my 20l v3g oil containers mix3d with 2 or 3 litre of petrol when I open the lid even in winter.

Our daughter was in hospital and we got chatty with mother of child in next bed over the weeks. The father was due to come in and she warned us about his appearance so as not to be too shocked. Seems they had bought their first house with a large overgrown garden so had a party with friends to clear it up. It was a hot day and petrol strimmers were being used. When the bonfire to burn all the waste was lit father didn't notice that there was an open petrol container behind him. As soon as flame was lit from match father was engulfed in fireball from the open container fumes. It was a hot day and he didn't have a shirt one either. He ran into the house and got under the shower. By the time people went to help him his flesh was falling off. It was touch and go whether he'd live due to the extent of the burns but eventually recovered.
When he came to see his son we could understand why he hadn't been in before and why wife had warned us - basically his feature had melted He turned out to be a lovely bloke and was only in mid 20's.

You don’t appreciate the danger until your trying to put out a petrol fire on something that you didn’t want to burn. Damn stuff just keeps catching again!
