Heart over head again, I've bought this cheeky little number sight unseen for no reason other than it was interesting and cheap.

Storebro ornamaskiner lathe, all the tags are in Swedish!

That's literally everything I know about it.

Looking forward to it getting here early next week, hope it's not clapped out!

That looks interesting, as you say if it has some useful life left in it, has to be well worth £350. Good luck with your new lathe, looking forward to the updates when you get it.

The main lathes Storebro page says the firm is still going and supporting old machines so you might get a manual if you ask.

Its always a gamble when taking a punt of a machine....you know someone is more than likely to nab it .

And the translation for ornmaskiner is Eagle machines. It's actually Örnmaskiner in Swedish but you don't have our characters.

Like when one of our big banks decided to change name to a more international image by just changing that letter. The CEO stood in front of the press and declared " were still the same, we just got rid of the pricks" (pricks in Swedish equals dots in English....)

Both brands have always been quality machines.
I did my first NC programming on a Storebro lathe.

Well it arrived. An interesting old girl. Very different to the Harrison.

Bed wear is very, very bad, the amount of grit that came flowing out after some fresh oil was disappointing, just been grinding away at the ways, it's so worn near the chuck that the saddle has starting bearing on the flat surface next to the v-way. It's missing 5 changewheels too.

Was worth a gamble!

Haven't adjusted for wear or powered it on yet to see what it's really like.

If it's too far gone I'll clean it up and move it on or part it out, bit of money in the L00 chuck and faceplate.

Not at all. It was my decision not to go and inspect it.

So this thing is BER so I'm weighing up what to do with it.

In addition to the massive wear on the bed (.015" near the chuck) there is something very wrong with the clutch that provides drive to the spindle in hi gear so It only works in back gear. I haven't investigated further.

The way I see it, I have two options.

Option one, the pipe dream : rig something up to grind the bed using the tailstock ways. It would never be perfect but it would be useable. Maybe have a go at scraping In cross slide and compound. Requires significant investment of money and time.

Option two, the likely : sell everything I can from the machine (L00 3 jaw and faceplate for a start) and then bastardise the lead screw and half nuts onto my Harrison to make it a fully metric machine.

Thoughts? What other bits could I use in other projects? Turn the headstock into a polishing wheel?

Theres an interesting gearbox for the motor to adjust speed I've yet to investigate too.

Me personally I would try my best to sort it.

Even a knackered machine can do good work if the spindle is still good.
What’s the overall length of the machine?
I could put it on my Rockford planer and get it close enough to be pretty good with two coats of scraping, actually straight off the planer it’s going to be better than 99% of machines out there.
