the one that passed every year just stopped for a cup of tea and asked if I wanted any jobs doing a bit of work would have knocked him over gave him the tea and offered him a few reddies and he wouldn't take it said he had no need for it . I often wonder what he did with his life before he took to the road

My brother died a year back homeless and alone.

There is no answer to that.
What I can say is that I worked with the homeless for a while in New York. If you are going to be homeless, New York should not be your first choice. I have a great deal I could say but none of it is for a public forum. It has certainly given me some very different "life skills".

Donations. I always give to the Sally Army. They are a world wide organisation actually and irrespective of some of the high salaries that some of them are on by and large the people at the sharp end dealing with the homeless and down and outs are in every instance I have witnessed very caring and dedicated people.

My late father in law a veteran of Atlantic and Arctic convoy duty would only donate to the Salvation Army, although he himself was a Welsh Baptist.
He said whatever port you docked at the Sally Army would always be there with a cup of tea and a sandwich or a slice of cake. Sometimes if you had survivors of torpedoed merchantmen on board there'd be blankets and clothing. He had enormous respect for them.

I've been asked by the same guy, on four separate occasions, spread over about two years, for 45 pence.

I once opened my front door to put the recycling in the bin....and some random woman pops up and asks me from £20.....must be some sort of London weighting. Am in me slippers and TV watching gear...very odd.

Also had a strange one down the local shops....really posh lady comes up and asks for a couple of quid...was all very odd....I looked at what she was wearing and looked at me own scruffy clothes and said she should be giving me money!

I had one young chap ask me for money for bus fare to Sheffield as I was outside getting in the car. I was going to Sheffield so I offered him a lift and he declined and walked away. No helping him I suppose.

I’ve had them asking for money for fuel as they’re nearly empty, kids with them and stuck at the services blah blah. offered them a Jerry can of fuel I had in the Landy and they did the same, just walked away.

no he wasn't going to Sheffield he just wanted free bread and if people are daft enough to give it to them it fuels the fire

I delivered a couple of waste compactors to the Salvation Army College in London last year.

Apart from the fact that the building itself on Denmark Hill is absolutely stunning, the people I dealt with and spoke to were the nicest folk you could meet. Not overtly God botherers, just very helpful, nice, courteous people. My dear old Mum always had a lot of time for the Sally Army and would have been tickled pink to know that I'd been there. And without getting into religion, the story of General Booth, the founder, is an incredible story that's well worth reading.

I am supposed to be related to Booth somehow, a family story going down the years is that he was heavily on the booze as a boy apprentice, literally a child on the gin and rum until he suddenly saw Jesus and realised the error of his ways, jacked in the grog and founded the SA. They had a motto, Soap, Soup and Soul or something, and tried to stop workmen drinking.
This annoyed people so much that they formed a Skeleton Army, whose motto was Beef, Beer and Baccy, and the two groups had running street battles, with the soldiers of Christ giving as good as they got
Definitely very nice people as said above.

I wouldn't mind meeting the 2 guys who king hit him from behind, knocking him out laughing about it.
Maybe the other one who kicked and trampled his encampment, threw all his food away.
He never hurt a flea and never begged.
