A round turn and 2 half hitches would have been a much better choice (ideally with a D shackle as the sharp edge on that hole will not do his rope any favours either) as he would have been able to undo it under load if it all went pear shaped. Even a bowline would have been a better choice.
Handy in an emergency. Use rope that doesn’t stretch. I have a 200m rope for extraction, it’s terrible. It’ll stretch 40m easily.
Granma/egg sucking alert, to those who are aware of it, but.. if that rope parts it can take off limbs because off the stored energy. Stretchy rope is for specific jobs like e.g. anchor snubbers, mountain climbing etc not hauling 4x4's or towing vessels.
