To be honest I'd like to see a fairly bog standard, mass market, vehicle from another marque do something comparable.

you know as well as I do about the camel Land Rover true story and the story of bullitt in San Francisco the mustang was rebuilt a good few times and so was the challenger

Not so sure...
A few years ago a few mates and I went over to France to meet up with some other friends there to do some off-roading there. The first time I was introduced to one of the French guys on a previous trip (he was acting as guide for us) I was told he's got two vehicles, a lifted lightly modified Disco 1 on 37" tyres and an 80 series Land Cruiser on home built portals where the small set of tyres were 44" diameter. Naturally we then asked what the big set was - still 44" but 44" wide as well. Special fitment for Scottish peat bogs
. If he turned up in the Disco we were in for a good time, if he turned up in the Toyota we were ****** and would spend all the time stuck. He turned up in the Toyota.Anyway I digress, a few years and several trips later we're back out there. Me in the 110, the other Brits in a 2.5 P38, a 200Tdi 90 and one in a mid 2000's Toyota Land Cruiser. We hadn't even started the off-road stuff (ok a few dirt tracks but that was about it) and the Toyota comes over the radio saying he's lost all brakes (in an auto). We'd just come off the autoroute and turned onto some small side-roads and as he touched the brake to check his speed going down a dip his foot went straight to the floor. Checked all the obvious stuff and nothing, it gets recovered to the main dealer in the nearest town who says they need to plug it into the diagnostics. Except they don't have the right connector, cable and computer software for it (it was a Jap import into GB). They phone round all the dealers in France and no one has the right cable. The Toyota gets left at the dealer to be recovered back to the UK which took two months by the RAC and some fairly heated phone calls by the owner because despite taking out the all singing all dancing policy which was unequivocal recovery they were still fighting over it and wanted to scrap it. These events caused great mirth in the group which consisted of mostly Land Rover (from a Series 3 all the way up to a Disco 4) but with a fair few Toyotas, Jeeps, Nissans of all vintages. After a fitting tribute (with a backing track of The Last Post) at dinner in the campsite I posed a simple question to the die-hard Toyota fans in the group (one who owned the portaled 80 series).
"If you were given the money to walk into any dealership and buy a modern off-road vehicle that you had to use for a trip through Africa / round the world what would you get?" The answer genuinely surprised me because if I let my head rule I don't think I'd have made the same choice. The answers all came back as a Land Rover - varied between Range Rover and Disco. If I'd said any vehicle from the 90's onwards it would have been Toyota but they all agreed, if it had to be a current show-room spec vehicle, it would be a Land Rover. These are people who will drive down to Morocco for a long weekend and a holiday is heading out through Africa or to Corsica, Russia etc.
The logic behind their choice was, yes the Land Rover will be less "reliable", but when it goes wrong it will be a sensor or something and might go into a limp mode but will keep on driving. The Toyotas etc., don't suffer from that but when they do go wrong (and by all accounts a new one would) it would be terminal or require a main dealer. Toyota in particular appear to be still riding the laurels with their reliability from the older generations. The new ones don't seem to be cut from quite the same tree. All that being said this was their opinions, I've never considered newer stuff other the Land Rovers so am not in a position to comment.
Although there was a discussion a while back (think it was on LR4x4) where a lot of the utility companies are keeping hold of their Defender fleet because the modern alternatives just simply aren't up to the job. I have noticed with all the "storms" (sorry was a bit of a non-event down with me) that unless it was the boss-man the utility companies either had vans for roadside work or a Defender. Equally up in the Highlands it was the same, either a van or Defender. Speaking to some people who work for Western Power they'd trailed Jap pickups but certainly on the cherry picker variants the chassis simply couldn't cope so they went back and kept the Defender fleet going. A lot of the pickups also can't tow a huge amount, load up a Land Rover to 3.5 tonnes and you can still put 3.5 tonnes behind it. When my parents had their mains supply put underground we spoke to some of the guys there and by the time they had all the HSE equipment loaded up they were almost at their weight limit as it was.
I know its a bit off topic, but couldnt they find anyone who could talk at a speed and pitch that humans can understand? My dogs just went mental..

I recently bought a 2015 L200 as I needed to cut my fuel bill, I test drove a Toyota, Isuzu and a Nissan first. Bearing in mind I was in a 17 year old Discovery they all felt weak, not very nice on the road and I doubt they would be much cop off road.
The L200 was the best of the bunch, not taking it off road and I've seen videos of L200's struggling with stuff the D2 would just walk up
Yes I like the L200, the interior is hideous and it sounds like a 4 cylinder with a DPF but if I could afford a new defender there would be one on my drive, racked out and ready to work

I only had a quick watch on my phone so didn't spot that detail; I was thinking that if there were an association with the new Bond movie, which might use the new Defender, it may have been perhaps filmed at the same locations - I know that some of it was filmed in the Aviemore / Cairngorm area.
EDIT... Ignore me, I'm talking ballcocks - there's no way that's all Scotland!
