F360, on a laptop?

I like the sound of that - there's plenty of ex corporate used ones on ebay too with dedicated graphics - I never buy new laptops.

Looking into them the XPS has a "gaming" graphics card (GTX1650) whereas the P50 has a "cad" graphics card (Quaddro M1000) Both would suit your needs though.

I understand that f360 is coded to take advantage of gaming graphics cards, it's all directX or openGL

I put a clean install of win10 on a dell a few weeks ago, fairly low spec machine but a nice screen.
The only thing I have installed is f360.

It takes ages to load but seems to handle everything ok once it is running.
There is a lag/temporary freeze every now and again. Not worked out why, I have a feeling it might be the auto-save to the cloud over my slow internet connection? May also explain the slow start up time?

You are welcome to borrow it for a while if you want to try it out?
Personally I dont get on with using it on a laptop, it's the touchpad I find awkward to use for cad. Obviously you can plug a mouse in but that limits you to a desk or spend some money on a spacemouse or something to use it on the sofa..

That's the beauty of the Lenovo Thinkpads, the mouse nipple is really accurate, I've never understood why people like touchpads so much.The Thinkpads have both. I work on large enterprise level storage systems at work that use Thinkpads as consoles. The touchpads are disabled because there is too much risk of clicking a wrong option.

One my colleagues uses the touch pad on his Thinkpad and it's painful to watch especially on some of our systems where we have to work through a service procedure.

I have got a couple of hp's with the nipple on and they are pretty precise. They also have the touchpad and you can set the speed on both individually so I use the touchpad for going from one side of the screen to the other fast and the nipple for better accuracy.
The lids also fold around and then flat so you can use them as a tablet. Touchscreen but only work with a pen which is actually great as you can rest your hand on the screen and the pen has various function buttons for right click and stuff.
They are getting on a bit now so would probably not run fusion. I could update them but they are daylight viewable displays and the replacement cost is not pretty. Tempted to set a new one against my books and use the old one for a boat chartplotter though!

I think it's just because I learned to use computers sat at a desk so it just feels more normally to me. I have got laptops, wireless mice, 3d mice, graphics tablets and what not but if I sit on the sofa I only ever manage about 5 minutes then the dogs are climbing up on everything or I am falling asleep, or both!

Dell XPS 15, The engineers have them for cad. Pretty decent if used with a docking station and 24" screen. Bit spendy though

Edit: asked engineers what they think, very happy with XPS machines, other departments have Lenovo thinkpad P50's and they are also recommended

I have a work provided Dell XPS 15. It's an i5 with 8Gb ram. I did start using Fusion on it but am now using Inventor instead, copes with what I throw at it and the touch screen is awesome.

The only negative is it is not exactly a lightweight but I'd have another one

EDIT: Just to clarify, I work in IT, Inventor is on there for hobby/college use

I can't speak highly enough of my XPS, I've been using Ansys for FEA this week and it runs it better than the computers around uni which crash every ten minutes, not enough ram I imagine. XPS has upgradeable ram so that shouldn't ever be a problem.

I have a 2 year old Dell laptop (£450 from PC world so nothing epic)

Does run fusion360 but does have a hissy fit every so often. But then I think that's alot of the windows add ons also glitching.
Needs thinning down and getting back to bare bones probably to speed it up

upgrading laptops isnt as easy as people think normally its hd drive up to ssd and a memory upgrade the graphics isnt one that tends to be upgraded

I swapped the i3 in my Lenovo for an i7 (the 35W mobile version, 3520 I think) and it got a graphics upgrade into the bargain.

More RAM and an SSD plus Win10 and it's almost as fast as the i7 office PC at work (and the graphics on that aren't great either).

I don't use Fusion360 but it runs AutoCAD and Solidworks to an acceptable standard for my needs.

Update: picked up a used Huawei Matebook X pro last night off ebay - very nice machine. Got it dual booting Mint 19.3 for 90% of my work and Win10 for Sketchup and F360.

Has a 3:2 aspect ratio screen which is nice and a gforce MX150 gpu.

Edit: did have it dual booting - just corrupted the partition table whilst trying to do some resizing. Time to put linux on it again, I'll worry about making windows boot later.

The linux mint installer takes care of setting up another uefi partition and the dual boot business - I just accidentally formatted the windows boot partition whilst messing about in gparted.
