Just been into Lidl, (only went for a look round), & came out almost £50 lighter. Those places have a lot to answer for.

Was wondering if that little benchtop drill they're currently selling is any good? I'm currently a bit limited on space, so my Pollard is a bit bulky.

Seems nice & compact, doesn't it, which is what I need currently. Been bitten by shonky benchtops with loads of runout before though, & don't fancy finding out the hard way as to whether it falls into that category.

No. Wasn't hand driven. It was just on the bench to the right of the door as you walked in.
VERY heavily built, but looked like it would only do about 6mm max dia, and maybe 1" of drop, but there was some adjustment by raising the head?
It was almost a micro mill - it was so heavily built.

edit: might have been pollard corona 9fx?

Are those re-chargable lights LIPO powered? If so they are banned on some sites after one started a fire from a faulty battery. Not a Lidl one I might add but a generic Chinese. I had a bulletin about them from our main contractor a few weeks ago.

Got sucked in to Parkside drill bit sharpener a few years back, it had a half decent 13amp plug on it.

Ah. The Pollard Corona. That's the one I'm having trouble finding room for. It fits in lovely, without the motor fitted. it's going to block my walkway off if I fit the motor though.

Are you sure? I replaced my Lidl drill with a Meddings Drilthru, there is no way I would go the other way.

I don't use a drill press very often: and the meddings is just over-kill for when I *do* use one - or its not big enough(!).
The last three times I've needed a press, I ended using a wolfcraft adaptor fitted to an old b+d - simply because it has the depth capacity.
I can't mount a forstner bit, and then fit a piece of 3x2 under it, for instance, or a holesaw and a piece of 200mm shs.
If I was banging 16mm holes through 50mm box, or 12mm holes in bar, it would be perfect - but I don't, and it takes up valuable shed-space: too much for the use I get from it.

quick review:
feels reasonably good quality.
cast aluminium base, steel pillar + rack.
plastic arm. :-(

motor sounds a bit rough, but speed control is smooth - it hunts a little bit on start up, but settles down after about a second.

700w motor, so probably 1/2hp max. 500-2500rpm infinitely variable, and it claims up to 13mm in steel.


i've been moving the meddings today, so it feels ridiculously light - for my use i *think* it'll be ok. 3 year warranty!

but... i won't be disappointed if i don't manage to sell the meddings - i'll find room for it.
