Blocked pollen filters damaging resistor on fan?

Anyone actually experienced this? I guess it could happen,.....something to keep in mind I guess.

yup. see it regularly. poor air flow so the resistor gets hot and the thermal fuse fails.

The resistor is cooled by the air flow so as welderDave said above

There is a certain type of Renault - which involves removing the clutch pedal to change the pollen filter - best described as a "filter for life".

New - 2018> VW and Skoda cars have really improved service access to pollen filters - best on any car yet!

Newer VW ones are pretty simple to fit and a lot cheaper than they used to be.
Although vw also do sealed for life gearboxes that can not be serviced according to the dealer yet they run a lot smoother if you flush the oil and fit a new filter at 80-100k.

We repair VAG group DSG gearboxes - clutches - flyweels - Mechatronic repairs. Big money earner at our workshop.

But +1 for changing the fluids and filters - the wet clutch gearboxes have a 40k interval - the dry clutch ones have no service interval.

Try changing it. Probably under a tenner and the windscreen will desist in half the time!

Couldn't figure why one car had a crap blower fan - some rummging under the dash and out came a caked filter - car had full dealer service history showing it had been checked/changed as required. I t certainly hadn't for quite a few years!

Yep my Vito would eat resistors given the slightest encouragement, mucky pollen filter, snow on the air inlet, any excuse Fortunately the mk2 Vito is an easy pollen filter swap unlike the mk1 which was an under the dash contortion exercise so no excuse really.

2009 in ibiza or fabia. 2 sliders under glovebox and the pollen filter falls out.

Brilliant design and so easy.

But 9n polo is a right pain to do resistor as stupid stupid place.

I think I have done one, and managed to shoe horn it past the clutch, or at least not have to remove the entire pedal assembly, but that was a few years ago. I try and avoid cars.

Had one go in my Ford Courier van, that filter was full of ****e!

It's amazing how many cars with "Service History" have cabin filters that look like they've never been changed. Really makes a big difference to air flow.

The cabin filter on a Discovery 3 can be changed in 2-3mins if you've done one before yet I've still seen them with so much dirt that you can hardly see the folds.

I've upgraded a lot of anaemic resistor packs when they are prone to burning out and replaced them with big wire wound power resistors. Problem solved.
Still it is worth changing any filter on a regular basis - given their intended purpose.

I agree with @premmington - a lot of manufacturers disregard the practicalities of accessing many of these things, some downright daft design decisions create these "sealed for life" components, whether they were intended to be or not!

Want some air flow over the windscreen and don't wanna spend some money - take the pollen filter out - throw it away - save your tenner.

I looked at an early Mondeo which always had a puddle of water in the front footwell and after reading about common problems found it was the cabin filter at fault. It wasn't a big job to change but it had never been done, the old one was a soggy disgusting mess and it never filled up with water again after the swap. The one in my Citroen is a contortionist job to do and it looked like it had been taken out and blown through with an air line a few times instead of replaced so I fitted a new one grand total of about £4 what were they playing at ?
