probably ok in a design technology class for woodwork in a school they only seem to buy crap nowadays they wouldn't know quality if it hit them in the face I have just wired safety stops on Clarke and pRoxon gear in a school

Variable speed (probably DC) motor, so low speeds (if you can call 500 RPM low) and high torque means no cooling airflow, cooked motor... The hobby mills and lathes have the same problem (and The Wise add a PC fan to keep some air flowing)

Bought a old record similar to the above for 25 quid.
Serves me well when precision isn't an issue and takes up very little bench space.
Everything else goes on the mill drill

No, no machine mart, we have a few of the British shops over here now though, Screwfix, one opened near me i and i did not know. CEF for electrical stuff, but no machinemart.

Hear hear. Once you've had a good look at an old, quality bit of kit (that, to be fair, was probably 'standard' quality in its day) you can soon spot the cheapnesses and weaknesses. I sold a Fobco Star on Ebay for just over £100 a couple of years back (typically, every other one sold a month either side of it fetched more ) and that would have picked up the Lidl/MM things and thrown them across the workshop - and my ancient Perrin would do the same, but first it'd let you flycut the top off, mill a phallic symbol into it, bore out the column and spin it up to 20,000rpm on the way

I suppose it is OK, as long as you don't mind everyone who comes into your workshop saying "What a weird pillar drill..."

The designer of this - or probably the Bosch PDD40 of which this Lidl one seems to be a cost-reduced copy - certainly thought outside the box.
The operating handle is weird ( the Bosch is worse, it's an old pram wheel ). So is the work hold-down clampy thingy.
Mostly made of aluminium, it will be light, so must be bolted down.
Rather than a belt-drive induction motor, it will be a geared high-speed universal ( brush ) motor, so it will be noisy. Much like an ordinary mains drill in an accessory drill stand:

Mediocre, I bought a similar one some years ago. Won't drill an 18mm hole in steel.

lacks grunt. (Power).

Ok for basic stuff, and better than nothing.

Variable speed doesn't really work it rev up an slow down alone without touching the knob or drilling through something
The alluminium base is little bit delicate
The return spring doesn't work
A classic drill press is much more better
