Baws!!! (Meddings drill failure...)

Couldn't have come at a worse time; have ten kids getting stuck into their course assessment tasks in Practical Metalwork! Means I'm down to just one drill now.

Meddings L1 FS Mk V, made in Germany I believe - only four years old or so.

looks like motor end, probably 750W or therabouts, motors are easy enough to change and that size should be off the shelf and next day delivery more or less... might help you out. bizzare that it snapped at the motor shaft like that?

Remember, shy bairns get nae sweeties - ask for four and he'll think he's getting off lightly when he gives your two. Get the students to fix that one and you're quids in....

Yeah, shouldn't be too much of an issue to fix BUT stuff like this is dealt with outwith the local authority; school business manager has been quick off the mark to call them - whether or not they're quick off the mark themselves to order a spare before making the trip over from Glasgow is another matter!

agreed, the administration would take forever, unfortunately....

that said, you could look at it from another side. Have the bairns take the motor out, strip it, get them to make another motor shaft, reassemble, and mark their assessment on that accordingly. more realworld experience.. kids would love it too....

Yes to both, I realise how difficult your job is - I wouldn't have it for all the tea in China [to coin a phrase ].
There'd be a class of 'minor injuries'.....

There are extremes - for the brief time I did Tech subjects at school back in the dark ages, I recall a woodwork teacher throwing chisels across the workroom. He got respect [aka fear! ]. I'd not suggest a return to those days, of course!

They didn't; I'm pretty sure this is sudden failure - a remarkably clean fracture. Lad using it at the time was only using a 6mm drill bit!

Cheers, sorry - didn't mean to sound at all terse! Yes, I do what I can to get them to appreciate tools and how little money we have these days. Many have little interest in process and just want end result, but that's common to the always online generation of 'now'.

Practical Metalwork is taught in a small minority of Scottish secondaries (and many that do offer it, offer it to only those that are in fifth or sixth year) as it is largely down to the experience of the maturer teachers that fell into the profession later on in life. The younger ones that have little or no experience out of the world of education seem, in my experience, to have little interest in needing to use Swarfega at work... if you know what I mean.

In some ways I've kinda snookered myself at the smaller school at which I teach.

But the salary isn't bad and the holidays are braw!

All in hand! The company that Fife Cooncil pay to look after our kit have asked for and been provided with the drill's serial numbers, etc., so they can arrive with spares - I'm quite impressed, actually.

Looks like there's a step in the output shaft right at the break. Surprised there's no keyway (I assume that's further along the shaft?) but it looks like the cone is held in place by a friction screw, right at the break point...

Poor design and excessive belt tension would be my armchair diagnosis. That cone pulley looks way too long to me in some desperate attempt to squeeze one too many speeds into the advertising guff.

Um, I think I would rather have a good old V belt and put up with it slipping if the bit bites.

Nope, hadn't been changed in years as the belt speed is pretty much fixed; the upper cover is screwed down with additional bolts in order to make things as 'safe' as possible. They even installed covers over the open end of the spindle on the outside of the headstock so kids don't stick fingers in... no, really!!!
