burning question

I have practised some more, and now have another problem after doing a run of about 6 inches my shroud was glowing and actually caught light, I have a Clarke 130 en turbo, welding 2.5 steel both switches on max and wire speed 7I have a big blob of steel welded inside the shroud.
.why did this all happen

Sounds like you have the torch too close to the work. Should be about 1/2".

That worked, then I started blowing fuses, so I changed the extention lead and It seemed to get a lot better, It ain't easy this lark is it.

That being a problem in itself...

If you HAVE to use one, make sure it's the shortest one that'll do the job, and uncoil it.
