Just had my M12x1.75 split die break on me,ok,no probs cheap enough to replace.
But ,whats the difference between the two?

Just adjust it so it takes a small amount off then slowly tighten it we all brake one sooner of later
Guess i adjusted it wrong, hence why i broke it
Silly question?
Can you cut a slot in a solid die to make it function for cutting threads from scratch?
Why? Just ordered one for £3.99weld it back together then

here's a 1/8" bsp die I broke a few years ago, attacked it with the mig and its stlll being used to this day.

You can in a pinch but it's similar to cutting flutes into a bolt to make a tap, might get you out of a hole but not the best.
Disagree. A solid die will still be hardened correctly and usually has the correct detents for opening and closing. I have put a slot in several cheap chinese dies and they work supprisingly well for a quid each delivered, functionally identical to the real thing.
A bolt will not be hard enough to cut and it is very difficult to grind cutting edges correctly
