Just popped my 110v plane and skilly back in the van. Cordless is great for odds and sods but when your ripping 20 boards.

my only exception is the flexvolt will do alot off cuts, but its not a good framing saw

Finished the desk today. Toned down the edging (still looks very light in the picture, though), and added a metal back piece (an old wardrobe handle out the ‘useful one day’ box). Used some lovely little 7mm length brass domed pins to help hold down the wood edging, just to finish it off.

I’m quite tempted to do a bit gold leaf pattern stamping about 2-3cm in around the edge of the leather. Haven’t used gold leaf for ages, should be fun, and will kill the ‘sea’ of leather. The patterning in the leather looked better in real life, though.

Back to welding tomorrow (yippee!).

Will order some new bearings tomorrwo, but seem to be missing a part, I think there should be a second retaining bracket for the spring tensioner?

Today I was making some more progress on a replacement switch housing for my bandsaw. While I was doing it, I tightened up the z-axis on the mill (which I usually do when I'm milling) and the handle snapped off in my hand. I hadn't even tightened it up that much.

I carried on with the job (tightening the handle with a pair of pliers), but once it was done I decided I needed to do something about the handle (the scratch marks you can see on the handle body are from the pliers I was using as a temporary tightening method):

A rotary broach is on my ever-increasing list of things to make but I haven't got there yet, so it seemed like too much hassle to try to make a replacement handle for the existing screw. The design (that can be indexed round thanks to the spring and short hex section) is mainly there due to the restricted access on the x-axis and y-axis. Those haven't broken (yet) and the access restrictions are somewhat different on the z-axis.

So I decided to make a one-piece version instead:

It's made up of three parts: the body (turned and single-point threaded from 20 mm EN1A), the arm (8 mm silver steel with a flat filed half-way along) and an M5 grub screw to hold the arm in place. The only reason I used silver steel for the arm was that I had a piece that was the right length already and it saved effort. The rounded end was made with a file (while the work was spinning in the lathe) before cutting the thread. Probably would have been quicker to use a die to cut the thread, but I quite enjoy single-point thread cutting and it saved digging in the drawer for the right die size, so what the heck.

Here it is in place:

You can't see from the photo, but there's about 5 mm clearance between the arm and the angle scale when the screw is tightened.

I’m done with my self imposed Christmas break so got on and mitred some C channel and tacked it together for my 250x125cm welding bench.

Legs on tomorrow then I need to figure out how to get a 15mm thick sheet of steel off a truck and onto the frame.

Not really made, just a bit of welding. Pupil drilled a hole (partially my fault) where there shouldn't be one so rather than have him restart I took it home to 'undrill' the hole with the TIG.

Had to tweak the rear end of the car I’m working on so made a little dolly to slide under the steel skin onto the Ali one

Ended up moving it almost 10mm

Yup, got that and it works well for what we need but TIG is the better process for this; far more precise and surgical.

Have you signed up for the evening welding course at Fife College yet? They start next month I think.

Just reminded me. Last time I checked was quite far in advance gonna check when they run them as Glenrothes isn't too far but isn't close either so needs to be a suitable day really.

Are they making a toolmakers clamp, I think that was one of the things we made at school.
